Not sure if it's just me, but when I go to my inbox, I find it hard to see which messages are unread, as they don't seem to be highlighted/stand out from the read ones, or am I missing something?

You are not alone. I cannot differentiate between the two reds easily. Maybe being colour blind doesn't help.
