Site sections

Postby sp3ctre - Mon Feb 20, 2012 9:52 pm

This site has grown a lot in the last couple of years but the sections have remained fairly static.

With the introduction of the e89 Zed we added a separate section, but there is a certain messiness to the forum now, having a "general Z4" section and an e89 section.

I want to re-organise things and make them more organised, the question is how best to do it. I don't want to make sections for the sake of it, but it certainly makes sense to have a separate section for certain things.

I don't want to split the forum up totally, like certain other forums have done, but I want to make it so new members who use the sections rather than "new posts" will see the content they expect in the correct places.

An example would be to create an e89 section with its own "problems" and "how to" sections.

So... I am opening it up to the floor... what do you guys suggest we do to make things a bit more organised?

Thanks for the feedback... I did wonder how soon it would be before someone mentioned a coupe section

.. one question though... one question though, other than making coupe owners feel special, does it warrant a new section? What I mean by that is >90% of the car is the same as the roadster... most issues and mods are exactly the same. I am happy to create whatever sections we deem necessary but I also don't want to make sections for the sake of it.

Yes, it Would be good to have a more granular 'Z4 Discussion' section per model

- E85 specific
- roadster
- how to
- problems
- coupe
- why?
- how to
- problems
- E89 specific
- how to
- problems

Being serious now, yes I understand your concern but I do think the options warrant it. The interiors for example and the standard bits too. I agree about 70% will be the same but we could have specific Coupe bits in there, plus as you so well put it, it is an exclusive club

Thanks, I take your point, just playing devils advocate

... and I didn't say you were "exclusive", I said you were "special" :poke:

Hmmm. Not so sure about the separate coupe section - what's the difference between the E85 and E86 anyway -

- roof
- headlining
- tailgate
- final drive on the 3.0

Is that about it :idunno:

I've thought about it a little bit more than Adamski - though perhaps not a lot more :D

In the how-to section there are individual topics by part or modification area - perhaps the problems section(s) could be similarly split up to make things tidier ? At the moment there are a huge number of problem threads that mostly end up with 'how-to' answers, so having people post problems in the right section, i.e. Engine or Exhaust, would help with new members (or even old members who haven't been paying attention :D ) searching for specific issues / solutions. It's a lot of work to split all the problems up though  I guess the question is, if you split the e85/e86 (coupes are not special, they are the roadster's wayward sibling :poke: ), M and e89 sections in this way too, do you achieve a simpler user experience by making the site actually more complex to manage ?

I shall do some more thinking... And see what Adamski comes up with :P
