Is there a way that new member sign ups can be made more difficult for spambots?

I've had some on other forums where the user will have to answer a series of questions or solve puzzles that are a tad more difficult than the "Captcha" you see on some sites.
Maybe that could be implemented?

I'm not too sure about that, but please, please, please don't add a "Captcha" - they are the most irritating thing I've ever encountered on the net!

Half of them are illegible, the others don't work until at least the third attempt............. They are the work of the Devil.

Thanks guys, reslly appreciate this. We get a lot of spammers overnight and we catch a lot of them but some get through. I do a clean up first thing and during the day the mods get notified as soon as a post is reported, so we do keep on top of it.

If people comment on spam posts it just makes the job of the mods a lot more painstaking.
