Some show a load of details ie age, occupation, hobbies, location etc while others show little or nothing.
Should these details be mandatory on joining the forum or not ?

Nah, say as much or as little as you like IMO. You'll be judged on your contribution anyway, not your social background.

What difference does it make to how or why you contribute to a forum? If I want people to know things about me I'll tell them. I don't even have myself searchable on social media. I don't have where I work, where I went to school or update to say when I'm on holiday.

I like to keep most things about myself to myself.

I think a location should be mandatory. It frustrates me when people are selling/wanting to buy things and you haven't got a clue if they are in Lands End or Inverness !

Yeah totally with the sales location. Often the prices are pick up which I don't mind doing at all but often it's not mentioned and could be on for a day out to pick it up!

I'm pretty paranoid about having too many details on the Internet so would choose to leave if it became mandatory on an open forum.

Plus if I had to be honest with those details you would all assume I was a boring git before you'd even met me
