Seriously stressed :(

Post by smlbjanusz01 » Fri Apr 07, 2017 10:32 pm

Hiiiii everyone, I'm hoping someone will be able to point me in the right direction  so I was getting 2 incorrect gear ratio codes on my 2005 3.0 z4 so I had the box serviced, the fluid was very metallic but it all been changed now. The car went back into limp mode after about 4 miles but is now giving me an incorrect gear ratio code for gear for which it has never done before and the problem seems to be in gear 2/3. Short of changing the whole box is there anything else that's worth a try? I really don't have a clue where to start so any help would be much appreciated

Did they use the correct fluid for the box, did they change the filter in the box, who dd the work. Did the box just start playing up or has it been doing it for a while? these are pretty bullet proof boxes.

Yep, correct fluid was used, I had the filter and gasket changed too. I did think these were pretty strong boxes as I can't seem to find much on them. I used a local mechanic that was recommended to me, he seems to think it's the solenoids. I'm just baffled by the different code. I'm happy to change the box but I'm worried it could be something else that maybe causing the code. I've changed the battery incase it was a voltage problem. I'm so close to giving up but I've just got the car looking how I want :(

Try a BMW specialist (or dealer) before you consider changing the box. It could be something as simple as a gearbox software update. I had an 2001 E39 with auto, I took it to PMW in Chelmsford for a gearbox oil change, they told me my gearbox was 2 software updates behind!!. It was nicer afterwards.

Exactly what oil was used for your oil change ?
