Newbie erm problem
Hi guys, so I acquired my z4 in May with no problems until today when I take it out the garage for run in the sun only to find the roof will not open. So I guess this the dreaded failure. The car has been garaged since beginning of August and not used much or in the wet so I’m sure those drain holes will be clear and dry but will check tomorrow.
Any ideas why the motor decided to fail assuming it is the motor.
Is it easy to change or does the whole roof need to come off?
Any links to previous greatly accepted
Cheers Stevo

First, check that your parcel shelf is in the lowered position.
Are you hearing the motor when you press the button?
If its a failed motor or sensor problem there are several members that should be able to help you out depending upon where you are in the country - they have vast experience fixing failed roof motors without having to remove the soft top.

Hi and welcome to the forum OP.
This may help you - roof motors can be revived, and more importantly relocated to prevent future issues!

BTW don't forget to post some photos of your Z4!

Steve,
When you press the button to open the roof, do the windows drop, roof unlatches from top of screen and then nothing, just a flashing red light? If so the motor will have failed due to water ingress. IF you get an orange light and nothing else happens, then the problem is with the shelf.
Assuming it's not the shelf, then I, can easily fix this for you in under an hour, for a fraction of what a dealer or independent specialist will charge.
If interested, my email is in my signature.

Thanks so much guys. I’m going to check out the noise and light. The windows do drop and roof unlatches but then nothing.

Steve, where are you based? The motor will probably be partially knackered by sitting in a water soaked container.
Give Mike (Ducklakeview) a shout, he'll revive and relocate the motor.....problem solved!
Cheers

From what your describing it sounds like a typical roof motor failure. One of the resident roof motor doctors should be able to put this right for you fairly cheaply

I got mine done by Bowser134. It gets relocated to the back left hand side of the boot where there's a recess and it gets covered by a piece of matching carpet, so a neat job and you lose almost no boot space.

Give us an idea of where you are - nearest large town sort of thing and someone will tell you who is closest to help you out. Good new is its not the end of the world and you won't have to pay BMW prices to fix it.

Hi, I’m in Bucks just outside Aylesbury/Wendover. Thanks for the heads up. If anyone here is that way or a shortish drive away I’d be only too happy to enquire.
