New to the forum and looking for a 3.0SE manual
Hi guys,
I'm Ross from Essex and currently own an Impreza, it's ok, I'm not one of 'those' people, honest, I'm old and everything!
I've had Impreza's since 2002 and have used them for all sorts of trips including WRC in Germany, North Coast 500, quite a few trackdays and a few sprints at Curborough.
I want to do loads more trackdays and sprints but the cost of fuel is getting a bit silly now, especially when a full tank of V-Power only lasts 50miles on track! So I've been looking for something cheaper but just as much fun that can also be used and modified for everything from a daily, trackdays to European road trips.
After looking at all sorts of cars, I've come to the conclusion that the E85 3.0 is pretty much perfect as a good all rounder, plus a budget of around £5k will allow me to keep the Impreza tucked up in the garage for those rainy/snowy days and those times I've bought everything I don't need in B&Q and need a boot
And the chav mobile in all it's glory!

Welcome to the forum. Very cool looking skooby. Must be uncumfortable wearing a baseball cap under your crash helmet though.

Ha ha, I knew the user name would go down well! been using it for years, if I change it now I'll never remember a different one!
Your right Buzy, the baseball cap is really uncomfortable under my crash helmet and at 40 years old I look a bit of tw@t wearing one
Thanks for the welcome guys!

Welcome along geezah.
Reminds me of my 'looking for a 3.0' post just over a year ago. Hehe, happy days.
If there's any advice i can impart in helping your search, then it's try and find a pre-modded, pre-strengthened example if poss.
Z's are getting on a bit now and i'm finding that while they can retain their looks very well the mechanicals do need to be refreshed and fettled.
With a 5k budget you might bag an early N52-engined high miler but at 5k budgeti suspect you will have to settle on a M54 3.0, which is no bad thing imo. What you'll miss in slightly more power you'll make up for by having a dipstick
Check for oil leaks as most of the gaskets subject to heat cycles will have hardened over time. obd scan any potential purchase to find any hidden fault codes. Get clued up on the m54 and associated issues it can suffer - vanos rattle, disa rattle, intake boot whistling cos of holes, injector noise etc etc. Nathans DIY youtube channel has helped me lots, check him out- does a lot with older beemers. Plus all the usual checks.
My 'Betty's first tantrum' mega thread may be interesting to give u an idea of what i went through with mine. Lots of documented fixes and fotos in it....
Good luck w the search

Welcome to the forum OP.
Great user name and a smart Scooby.
I'm guessing you may well end up doing some mods once you find a Z4.........(you aren't old yet)!
Just wondered why you specified an SE - the seats in Sport models are much better, and very sought after. On the topic of spec Z4s were a bit basic as standard, so if you really want things like Xenon headlights, heated seats, parking sensors and cruise control it's worth looking out for them. (Cruise is not too dear to retro-fit on a pre-facelift though).
Roof motors also suffer from water ingress due to where they are located, but there are a few members who can revive and relocate them at a sensible cost.
Plus any M54-engined model is likely to need a cooling system refresh if it hasn't had one - radiators bow and expansion tanks are known to split.
There is loads more info on here if you do a bit of searching, but most of it is covered in this buying guide:-

Hope you find one you like soon - then we can see the photos!
