Replace Microfilter

Post by E85 » Wed Nov 07, 2007 8:38 pm

Does anyone have a link to instructions on how to replace the Microfilter for the Z4? Or if anyone has done it, can you provide a write up? I have the instructions for the E46 3-series who shares the the same engine, but don't think the Microfilters are the same. TIA

and I'm a pack rat too! I've actually pdf'd everything on paper that I have on my car including the manual, the salesmans guide, the brochure, handy things like this, the one touch roof thing from e46fanatics and on and on.

I got under there on the weekend and wasn't able to find it. But I was going by memory of the pdf and didn't dig deep enough. I thought it would be right there behind that plastic flap. This time I have printed it and I see that there are wires to play with before you get to another filter housing. I was half way there. Anyhow, thanks again.

Can anyone tell me where the third screw is hidden? I found one either side at the front lip and a black plastic push fixing in the middle of the tray.

Ok I have just finished this job... helps if you have the flexibility of a russian gymnast!

I ordered part number 64316915764 - this was £34 from the main dealer.. quite pricey for a filter with little specs of carbon in it!

FOR VEHICLES WITH
AUTOMATIC AIR CONDITIONING
S534A=YES
01 MICROFILTER/ACTIVATED CARBON CONTAINER 1 64316915764 $42.41

I found the instruction in the pdf above did not corellate with my 2003 3.0i (build date april 2003). May be some difference due to left/right hand drive or later cars.

In short to do the job involved:

Removing 2 screws at the front edge of the tray
Removing 1 plastic push fitment in the middle - remove the inner peg to release and then remove the plug itself. At this point the whole tray should fall down.
Unplug light and remove tray
Locate the filter housing (at the rear upper part of footwell)
There is an access panel at the bottom edge, slide this right (when on back looking upwards) you may need to release a peg a few inches up on the right hand side to do this.
Now the old filter is exposed, you may find lots of twigs and leaves fall out onto you (wear safety goggles if you have them).
Pull out the old filter, the rear edge will hit the carpet but a firm tug will remove it - note direction and orientation.
Clean out any debris in the filter housing.
Install new filter, noting an arrow on the side saying which side faces the front of the car.
Reinstall cover and tray, reverse of above :)
