Bluetooth, directory, Blackberry and Outlook

So a bit of a challenge here.

Just updated to the Blackberry curve 8310
Paired to my Generation 12 ULF module perfectly
My Blackberry address is synced to my Outlook file, which of course keeps the full address book on both. Perfect to work with on the Blackberry.

Trouble is this now downloads to the car all 500 addresses with extras for any 2nd/3rd numbers for office, home, mobiles, fax, etc. so my car ULF directory now has some 1000 (guesstimate) entries. Clearly impossible to scroll through using the 'next' to see batches of 10 entries at a time, thus rendering the directory useless.

Is there an obvious way to either export a sample to the ULF from a phone, or search quickly. Perhaps a second Outlook directory with a subset of numbers. If that's possible.

My ideal woudl be to have a sample of say 100 numbers that I'm ever likely to call from the car. Should I need an obscure one I could always manually interrogate the blackberry and enter manually.

If know you can filter the phonebook on the Blackberry, but not sure if this would then filter the sync.

Using Windows Mobile PDA you can you JetWare Mobile that filter the bluetooth by the Category field against each contact, which is What I do.

I administer a dozen BB users but havent looked at any third party products for this sort of issue, mainly I guess because the BT in the E90's is better to navigate than on E46's (I assume the Z4 is the same as E46's)

I have the same setup (not the same Blackberry, but the Pearl). I tend to put the cursor on the >> part of the screen, and keep pressing that until I get to the name I want.

Alternatively, on the list of the "top numbers dialed" is usually the one I want. It sure is not ideal by any means.

To be honest, I get called more then I call. If I do make a call, I am usually parked and use the Blackberry itself to select the name. Except that doing that, you normally pull some muscles in your shoulder by twisting around

I can not see a technical viable solution possible unless you try playing with having different addressbooks on the SIM card versus the device itself, and switch the Blackberry to the SIM address book. Again, a pain to do each time though.

Hi pvr - you're thinking is along the same lines as mine and I'm struggling to think of a viable solution. I agree that most calls tend to be inbound and as I said I can always interogate the B'berry for a number. It's just a real pain that having got the set up to work I can only have half the addresses on the directory and it's crammed with names I need to store but will never ever call them from the car. Perhaps I'll have to archive off and create a separate .psd file for them

srhutch - I confess to being confused by your reply. If I could filter the b'berry file before it syncs that would be perfect. Standalone or if there is a third party solution around suitable for B'berry?

Sorry for not being clear, I'm not the best at putting thing into words.

From the menu under contacts there is a filter option which enables you to view a certain category.

This will filter the BB address book, but it may also filter what is sent over the BT sync. If I get chance later is will take a 8300/8310 home and try it.

Update:

The guys on the X5 forum suggested thinking about creating a second or sub set of contacts. Went this route as I cuoldn't fathom out a filter that woudl work and now I'm able to in effect run 2 contacts files. One with some 500 names that I need, but never immediately/mobile and my shorter list of some 100 priority numbers.

I now sync the B'berry to the shorter list which is what appears on the ULF module but retain the larger list in the background on laptops, base pc, etc.

Problem solved however I am looking into another suggestion that lurking in the 8310 is a bluetooth 'hotlist' sync option

A bit of a monologue here but it might be useful to someone in the future

Taking on comments from a guy on X5 world I took Outlook and assigned categories to my contacts. I created a new category called 'BMW' simply named for ease of reference. Each contact that I wanted on the BMW ULF was so categorised. As an aside I also added other categories for 'Business' & 'Personal' since each contact can have multiple categories such that I can sort on my B'berry much easier.

On the B'berry 8310 there is a function to select which categories of contacts, or a 'hotlist', are syncronised using bluetooth, so I'm sure you can see where I'm going... Simply by selecting only 'BMW' category these are the only ones downloaded to the ULF module. It of course does this and automatically updaes teh ULF each time I switch on the ignition with the phone in range.

I now therefore have my base station, laptops and B'berry with all the contacts stored, but just the much more limited selection that I would ever call from the car downloaded. This of course is now manageable in the car and using the directory function and I can store all I need and find easily regardless of if they are business or personal contacts
