Z4-forum weekender: Applecross/Scotland - 18-20th May 2012!
Hi folks,
*** INFO UPDATED 12TH APRIL 2012 ***
This is VERY advance notice - to allow annual leave requests from work, SWMBO passes, etc - of what's become the annual Z4-forum Skye meet. Except this year we're not going to Skye
ALL Z4-FORUMERS WELCOME!
Details:
* Fri 18th, Sat 19th & Sun 20th May 2012
* Meeting 7.30/7.45am for an 8.00am departure (sharp!)
* Return Sunday early evening
* Start: Stirling Services (FK7 8ET)
* Finish: Airth Services (FK2 8PJ)
Format:
* Approx 450miles driving spread over 2 days: travel up on the Fri, Sat is your own, then travel back south on the Sun
* Destination APPLECROSS
* Route will be PM'd to those going
* 2 nights stay in Applecross (camping or hotel or B&B)
* All day Saturday for further driving and to explore further up the north-west coast
* Almost all A/B/unclassified(!) road, not much dual-carriageway/motorway
Accommodation:
* Option 1: Applecross campsite (5-min walk from the inn)
- £6 pppn for tents (might be slightly more - that's 2011 tariffs)
- Toilets/showers, etc and probably somwhere to plug your hair straighteners into...
- They also have wooden wigwams
- Booking essential - please book online HERE
OR
* Option 2: Applecross Inn
- The only hotel in Applecross!
- Approx £60 pppn bed & breakfast
- Booking essential - details HERE
OR
* Option 3: local B&B
- See lists HERE and HERE
Notes:
* There’s precisely sweet F.A. in Applecross itself apart from the pub/inn, a few houses/B&Bs, and the campsite – there isn’t even a shop so stock up before you arrive!
* Nearest shop selling food supplies is Loch Carron - approx 40min drive back up over the Bealach Na Ba pass
* NO fuel garage in Applecross so you'll need to fill up enroute (apart from the 4-pots...)
* Midge nets – hopefully no need at this time of year but strongly recommended to have just in case
And if you're not sure about coming along, check out the Scottish scenery you'll miss out on...
* Skye holiday June 2007
* Skye/Applecross driving trip June 2010
* Z4-forum Skye trip 2010
* Z4-forum Skye trip 2011
* hopefully that's helped convince you, and I've not even mentioned the awesome roads...
The Beleach Na Ba Pass:
* The closest to Alpine roads that you’ll find in the UK
* Climbs from sea level to 626m (2,054ft) via a series of tight switchbacks and steep gradients
* Not really a road to blast along due to v narrow width and blind turns and crests, but the scenery and experience makes it worth it
* We'll be doing it once in each direction

Can't say I'm particularly enthusiastic about this one.......
Nah, who am I kidding! We'll definitely be there - I know I'm off and Kirsty has her leave request in already!
I think we'll be camping. Just need to get the other half to agree first of all!

Any idea how easy it would be to go via Achiltibuie on the way back? I have friends living there and was considering taking an extra couple of days on the way down.

That's further north! Won't be on our route but it's fairly easy to head north from Applecross towards Ullapool then keep on going.JimmyPop wrote:Any idea how easy it would be to go via Achiltibuie on the way back? Looks like I won't be doing it now - my reg has managed to sneak in and get the week off so no chance of me getting it! Oh well. Applecross will have to suffice!a11y wrote:That's further north!
