Well he can certainly pedal an M3. Not sure I'd like to meet him coming the other way.

Route Napolean...N85 I think.....is mostly enjoyable and you're very near the Maritime Alps so loads of mountain passes to enjoy...just check they're open before you detour/head for a day out.
Try and get a run around the Verdun gorge also
We've biked this area twice and passed into Italy over the top near Bardonnachia.......great roads to be enjoyed and next time we're nearby will be heading to Ventoux.....I think there are motorsport events there which are probably the video's posted.
There's a website with usefull info which I'll check on but is something like: http://www.alpine roads
Enjoy the trip,sounds great
Checked it.....www.AlpineRoads.com

I went (by motorbike) to the Vercors last year, which is pretty close to Gap. Stunning and very spectacular region.

Look up the Col De La Machine for some pics and views, really worth doing. There's loads of good roads/passes in the region.

I have been to the Alps and Pyrenees numerous times and the Vercors is every bit as good, albeit over a smaller area.

Grenoble, give it a miss! Even on a bike it was a real PITA.

N85 Route Napoleon, agree with Highlander, great road.

Place to stay, here is very very nice and the most perfect location http://chateaudherbelon.com/galerie-photo-6.html

I second the Verdon gorges. If you can drive south (time permitting) there are some great roads through the gorge. Just watch out for some of the tourist coaches on the sharp bends. We watched in horror as one casually scraped down the side of an oncoming car.
Past - Z4 Coupe, gone but not forgotten
Present - 530d M sport touring

most of the alps you'll be blown away with views

We did a similar drive exactly two years ago from Uzes with a 6month old girl. Looked at those routes but finally decided to head to Chamonix via Grenoble etc as we'd never been to the Alps. One of the best drives and trips of my life
