A trip to the Coast . . .

Post by paulgs1000 » Thu Jan 19, 2017 10:31 pm

Watching the weather carefully, I had hope that Steph and I could get out on Wed but family put an end to that, so no problem, Thursday looked a similar opportunity to get the M out, top up that battery and keep the juices flowing

Gave the engine lots of time to warm up with a run up to Alnwick and you just can't pass on a photo opportunity like that. . .

The roads off the A1 are well known by us and offer some challenging driving and little traffic as was the case today . . .

Image

But losing the rear and then the front a little later just showed how mucky the roads can be. :( Need to keep a good look out and the conditions in mind. I'm ok with the rear end moving a bit but when the front goes light with understeer it is a worry  We saw lots of farm work going on, flashing lights in the fields and on the road so it was obvious the roads were going to be messy in places . . .

You have to make a detour to get to our next beautiful viewpoint but it's worth it - Low Newton by the Sea. Looking out over Embleton Bay to Dunstanburgh Castle - amazing. You used to be able to head down to the village square but as is the way, parking is set well back and before you get this view, at the top of the hill. . .

Image

Image

The sports exhaust brought a bit of interest from the locals when this guy poked his head over the wall to see what the noise was . . . :D

]Image

More clear roads and bends allowed us to enjoy the capabilities of the M - it really is a safe overtaking tool when traffic does appear - reminds me of our motorcycling days at times . .

Image

Heading for a few shots in the harbour at Seahouses we took another detour to Beadnell Bay. Took quite a few photos here as well but I'll not post them all up! Beautiful tower on their village church and by now the M is beginning to show the miles covered on those back lanes . . .

Image

Image

Never seen it quieter at Seahouses and all the passenger boats used to visit the Farne Islands are out the water and stored for maintenance - very colourful :D

Image

Some of these boats were balanced on single bricks - wonder how they cope in the wind?

Image

Image

Looking out at the Farnes the light was lovely and I am always impressed with the zoom on my Panasonic

Image

Image

Image

Image

We said farewell to Seahouses (though I could have stayed a lot longer with my Nikon - fabulous light out at sea and wonderful photo opportunities around the harbour - and so quiet :o )

Image

We were happy to head back to Alnwick as we had to call in to Barter Books to collect some credit

A fabulous day and the M performed wonderfully. I ended up putting the cover back over the M in the dark after the inevitable wash and prep - well worth it though - a terrific day! :D

Great pics again Paul, I don't mind having to wash the car if I've had an enjoyable drive out

Now that's a good way of thinking - I'll keep that in mind in future as it is a necessary chore before the cover goes back on

The road you're on (photo 1) heading in the opposite direction i.e. away from the Barbican and back towards Chillingham, is one of my favourites! It always brings back some very happy memories - Oh and one very unhappy one when i bent my old (Late 60's) Cooper S.
You don't stop playing when you get old - You get old when you stop playing!
So I bought a 35is with all the toys to play with.

That Cooper S sounds like fun ronk - just reading a book at the minute about racing Cooper S's in the late 60s/early 70s

Its like a trip down memory lane - we have had numerous short breaks at the Victoria hotel at Bamborough and travel all those roads, we usually start at Barter books.
Another great road trip - you're both keeping the flag flying, and topdown too :driving:

Well I never, the Victoria is one of our favourite lunch stops :D  Fabulous interiors, though we normally eat outside enjoying the view of the village and Castle.

Oh it was and was a properly sorted little car.
970 +0."040 = 999 full race (from a car 2nd in North England Saloon cars 1966) Straight Cut C/Ratio Box - etc etc
In its day it was a very fast car . The motor was capable of 8.5 /9.0 k RPM - It was replaced by a 1293 motor.
On reflection I think I should have been shot for the antics along that road at times. Perhaps Im growing old?

Cracking pictures. Enjoyed reading that. Great to see a Zed out and about. Had to take ours out after work today, for precisely the same reason. Needed to ensure the battery was topped up  .

Headed up to Bodmin moor.

The Cooper S I'm reading about was a mini 850 with a 649 race cam  The author then moved onto a Mini 1000 and I'm just about to read the section on the Cooper S. Straight cut close ratio box - there's a need to balance the revs there then :o
