Can a scratch be removed without repaint

Washing today and found an inch long scratch near the mirror on the upper portion of the door, I suspect someone catching it with a jeans stud or a bag.
It does not polish out and suspect it's through the clear coat, my understanding is nothing can be one to make invisible except repaint door? Which I don't want to do because of paint match.

I'm gutted, first mark on 5k mile car! It is really in a prominent position and smacks you in the face :-(

It's Titan, all comment welcome

Cheers

On an almost new car, Titan is fairly easy to match with a spot paint repair. A paint shop will basically only respray around the area and polish down the base and clear coats to blend with the original.

Paintwork is quite literally " in the eye of the beholder " . It doesn't matter how well it's painted, your eye is now drawn to the imperfection. So spart repairers are a lot better than others. Approved BMW paints hops can knock out some shocking work, I've seen it. Have it smart repaired by someone who has been doing it for some time, hopefully he'll know what he's doing, and see if you can live with it. Your eye will still be drawn to it, but I bet nobody else will see it. If it really annoys you,and that's all you can see, get your hammer out and dent the rear quarter. It will take your eye right off the scratch.......

Your suggesting a smart repair? Not sure about that, yet so see a good one, or more to the point, not see it

Well, I do know of a few highly skilled people here in Montreal capable of doing it. So I guess it's just a question of finding one in your own market.

My Missus caught the drivers door with the shovel today whilst clearing the snow! :( proper builders shovel not a nice plastic snow shovel!

Sorry to hear that Lee, not a nice feeling.

I've touched it in best I can, then I'll remove the blobs with some acetone on a lint free tissue, this is how I do chips, it certainly won't make it dissapear, but I suspect less risk than having paint.

It will give the dealer something to use to beat the price down when it goes for p/x, I suspect they'll claim £500?

A smart repair can make a scratch virtually non existent unless you know where to look.

I'd give that a go before a respray.

It depends how deep the scratch is and whether its just in the laquer or paint itself.

I've been detailing my Z for the last few days whilst its tucked away in the garage and had to remove 2 deep scratches from a bouncing stone.

First one was just laquer, so with some very very fine wet and dry I gently rubbed the scratch out and cut back over the area with G3 normal grade compound, bringing back the deep shine finished off with a buff with meguires scratch X.

The second one went through to the primer, so I touched it in and built up the paint. Left it to harden for a few days and then flatted it back with very very fine wet and dry, cut back with G3 to bring the deep shine back and finished off with meguires scratch x.

Scratches all gone, ready for a polish and wax.

It's through the clear.

My dilemma is;

Do I live with an annoying 1" long scratch in a really prominent spot.

Or

Local body shop; repair scratch, paint silver an area 6" either side, then clear the whole door.

Will I see it once done, not the scratch but colour mismatch etc?

Where abouts are you?

If near me id be happy to try to help with my meggs DA polisher - I've always been amazed how it can make obvious scratches look better or disappear all together.

if you've been doing it by hand, I'll bet you still have a load of clear left... BMW is tough paint...

I've worked a rotary, wool pad and cutting compound (basically the harshest level of cut) and still not destroyed clear on BMWs...

What are the paint readings?

Do you have a picture of the scratch?

Can you catch your nail on it?

You may be ale to polish or wet sand it out...

I would be careful of touch up paints in silver, the metallic flakes don't sit the same as when they are sprayed, so doesn't match... mostly looks darker...

Hope you get it sorted anyway..

to give you an idea, here was my mates car before I worked on it.... he was told several times it needed paint:
