Project 330 ?

My latest project has just passed it’s hardest hurdle, mapping ! Members may have seen snippets of my wee MX5 that I’ve produced a turbo kit for. Well eventually after nearly a full year on and off the dyno it’s finally mapped, well that’s not the total truth. We actually have 2 cars running the kits, firstly my sons which is stage 1 running 239bhp &238lb/ft @ hubs (270/270 flywheel) quick little car.
Mines is running stage 2 running 304bhp & 300lb/ft@hubs (337/330 flywheel) seriously quick car :o. I’m hoping to put some mileage on both to prove the reliability on both tunes and get a few bums behind the wheel to get their input. I was expecting to find BMW content when I saw 330!

Anyway that is a really tidy installation, and it sounds like they have a much more useful level of power.

I wouldn't mind a look around one, but you are probably 400 miles away! :(

I'll keep a look-out for updates on your progress though!
Coupes because stunning!

Cracking little cars the mx5 I had a mk2 got a while years ago. And my father in law had one until recently. My only issue with the mk2 was I always felt I sat on it rather than in it.

If my turbo dreams fail I may be talking to you. Looks a great kit. Can we have a little more info what turbo? Is it running an internal waste gate? Injectors pump?

Looks great
My little blue zed is in lots of bits. With lots of things started and not many finished! I may have found the limits of my time and ability!!

Machine Monkey this was quite a task manufacturing this install but here’s some build pics. The turbo is a Borg Warner efr 6258, it’s the smallest they produce and runs from 250/450bhp. It a very high spec , billet wheel gamma titanium exhaust shaft/wheel, steel cages ceramic bearings internal waste gate and built in dump valve. DW 800cc injectors , custom A&H intercooler, custom pipe work running blow thru maf switching to Speed Density/map when needed. I had to become a EcuTek dealer to purchase the full tuning package, but it’s been worth it as has endless features, map switching from steering wheel controls, launch control, flat foot shift, anti lag, immobiliser, valet mode. The list just goes on.
My only concern is we’re making way more torque than the competitors even on stage one and this has made the very quick indeed. Nice good turbos Borg Warner.I do think maybe i should have gone for a more conventional set up!
My intake pipe work is well complicated!! Although i am very keen to prove that rear mount turbos can work. Maybe it was a bit too much for my first ever project like this....
Hats off to you Steve another great build. I keep thinking i need to change my work life to be car focused. But I can’t see how i can make it pay my bills.
Some pictures of some of my pipe work you might be interested in. Not sure if you have seen them on my post?

I’ve read through your build thread and it’s certainly out there. I’ve no experience with rear mounted turbo installs, I’m not sure if you’ll suffer turbo lag with all the pipe work running to the front. What I would say is you’ll probably run more boost pressure with smallish pipe running to the front, slightly larger and you are able to keep the pressure down and more flow. I’m assuming this will be a low pressure system, what with standard motor?
On the mapping side you’ll be using a blow through set up and this is another ball ache on the mapping side. Keep a note of the maf pipe internal dia as he will have to configure the scaling for it. I’m surprised there wasn’t room to run your pipe on the underside?
On the turbo I take it there’s no water cooling used just oil ?

Hi Mark. Unlike the Z4 this one is going into production as it’s way to good not to. No point being selfish and hogging all to myself, think it’s time to promote and let some owners enjoy a very quick car.

You can tell it looks ready for production and very well thought out. The exact opposite to my build witch has been more evolutionary. First build and I won’t be doing that again!! Got any links to a Website site? A guy I work with has just brought a mx5

Hi Monkey. I only have a facepest site. SW Motorsort Performance Engines👍
It’s only been running for a short time but there’s always something interesting to see. Oh a couple of vids showing MX5’s on track tires in cold conditions 😁

I've just been pointed at this thread. looks like a very nice kit you are developing there!

I'm the owner of a Mk2.5 1.8 that had an intercooled MP62 supercharger running over 240bhp until fairly recently. It's a shame there aren't more SC kits available but they seem to be a dying breed.
