My Old 911 SC and 240Z

Postby Darren Slone - Sat Feb 25, 2012 2:36 pm

Whilst uploading my Cupholder and Spacer shots thought that I would post some of my old 911, I bought this in 1999 from my good friend, he fully restored it and rebuilt the engine a few years beforehand, i had always wanted a 911 from a very early age, I sold my beloved Datsun 240Z to make way for it.

I subsequently had another full restoration, changing the impact bumpers to 'RUF Yellowbird' fibreglass items, having new B posts and kidney bowls, Turbo discs, calipers and tie rods, hydraulic chain tensioners, new glass and carpets, I really liked this car but towards the end of my ownership all i wanted to do was polish it instead of drive, it was like a piece of art to me, in the end I could have sold it 5 times, a great guy from Manchester was first with the money, I delivered it to him on the Wednesday and by Friday I had my ///M!!

Hope you like it :)

A proper example, love both the colour and the light interior which makes a change from the usual black, how does your ///M compare to drive?

Thanks glad you like it :)

They are chalk and cheese really, at the time I thought the 911 was like a rocket coming from the 150 BHP 240Z, my 911 was a 204 BHP with SSI exhaust and some head work, the ///M makes the 911 feel as if it had the hand brake on, it really needed to be revved whereas the ///M has so much torque, sometimes I can put my foot down in 6th and then go for another gear thinking I'm in 4th :)

Gorgeous 911 Darren

I'll bring the PTG round to yours this week - going to wash the car tomorrow and take a load of measurements.

Thankyou, I loved them all, I was 18 when I had the 240Z, sold my MG Midget for it, then had a 924 or two then a TR6 bought back and restored my 240Z, won best restored at the Autoglym concours then my friend said he was selling the 911, a childhood dream so the 240Z had to go :(

I never actually thought that I would sell any car once I got it, I loved them that much, but once you start to think about another car then it's probably best to move on :)

Nice, I had one of these when I collected 1983 Porsches:

Image

That's my SC targa at the end, behind my 928S and 944. The SCs are fun and quite reliable for their age. I switched from that to a 2003 Z4 2.5i and it was like going through a time machine - sports cars have moved on so much!

What a good idea, collecting a single year of Porsches, which was your favourite?

I always liked the other models too, had an opportunity to swap my 240Z for a 928S2, I still look at 944's on occasion on pistonheads and consider getting one for the right money.

I totally agree about sports cars moving on so much too !! :D

The 944, and since that car I've always felt Porsche does their best work with the entry level models - 914, 944/968, Boxster/Cayman. Though my 944 was the same year as my 911, it was miles ahead in balance and handling, shifting (didn't have the 70s-era 915 gearbox), and much better heat and AC.

I often think of doing the one-year thing again, going for 1989, which would get me a 928S4, 944 S2, and a 911 cab with G50 gearbox. Perhaps the last great year for Porsches.
