Postby stephendutton1963 - Fri May 04, 2012 9:00 am

Hi just looking for suggestions for possible replacement car for my son. 3 yrs driving experience clean license. Looking for some performance vs insurance vs running costs. So basically whats the best performing cheapeast to run reliable car for a 21 yr old chap. All suggestions welcome only other criterior is car is newer than 08 and costs under 8k. May be a tall order but thanks for looking. Steve

My lad just bought a ford focus. 08 plate which seemed good value for money. Insurance was dear ish but then he.s got a resonable car. He paid about 4.5k. Car as 50k miles

no harm in asking but what ever someone tells you they pay will be nothing like what your quote would be, so really there isnt any point

corsa vxr? clio 198 or whatever horsepower they've managed to get out of it now...not really looked into them for costings etc but surely around 8k mark?
and insurance will vary massively but i cant imagine it being too difficult to get it reasonable.

I had a MK2 16v Golf GTi at 21 in the 80's... They're still reasonably bullet proof so maybe a newer 1.6 TDi golf

I'd buy a 2007-2007 Hyundai Coupe. Cheap as chips, reliable, easy to mod, looks the part, is fun to drive, albeit too underpowered and understeery.

I've owned a Tiburon, very much the same car, in the V6 guise.

Have a look at the Toyota Yaris 1.8SR.It has the celica engine ,17" wheels.looks and goes well. Being a Toyota it will be reliable and cheap to service and insure.

The key to getting that blend of performance and lower insurance costs for young drivers is to look for cars that their age group don't normally go for. So for example you may find a faster Mondeo is cheaper to insure than a slower focus. Often this can be found by going for bigger saloons rather than smaller, "cooler" hatchbacks. On the plus side it normally results in more car for the money but your son may be in a car that lacks street cred.

How about a smart coupe http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Smart-Roadste ... 43afbfb589 i have no association to that car what so ever, just an example of what car i mean. 700cc engine which has a turbo and can be modded and remapped if you wish. Should think insurance shouldn`t be to high due to engine size plus cheap running, tax ect. Brought my misses a smart for two and already modded it with a bigger tick pipe and racing filter. From what i hear the engines are not bullet proof but can be rebuilt for around £1000 if they go wrong.
