As promised. A thread all of it's own.

The pics are rubbish. I would take better ones but this weekend I started taking the interior out to cure the usual leaks, check and sort rust in the floor, wash the carpet etc. It's by no means a minter but mechanically sound enough in that it managed 330 miles from Coventry to Glasgow in one go without anything falling off or catching fire.

Looks great and especially in white  It brings back memories of being 18 when a school mate's girlfriend had one in silver. It was her family's "stable car" - they literally used it only when they were travelling to and from the stables covered in manure  ...until we got hold of it

Amazing beautiful can you take for a drive down memory lane some time please. Its the best hot hatch ever made and a classic already.

I didn't have a gti I had a 205 xs for my first car 1.4 but my mate had 1.6 gti my little xs used to keep up just to 60. I did have a few undisclosed internal engine tweaks :?

That looks great Mowflow. My wife used to have a Miami Blue 1.6 GTI - a great little car which we took on a long trip to Wick / John o Groats etc. No power steering made it heavy compared to modern cars but I think it's still a classic shape - still have some of those side GTI badges somewhere I'm sure.

Those wheels look in great nick.

How come we don't see you at Scottish meets ?

Absolutely awesome. Really great car and still a good looking car today. I think they have aged well!

I grew up with fast golfs and peugeots before my dad started getting BMWs. Had 2 205 GTis and 2 309 GTis those were the days lol! Good memories!

Super cars.

My Dad a 1.9 in the 80s that I used "borrow". I nearly died in that car a hundred times usually racing a friend that had a Renault 5 GT Turbo.

Happy Days

Awesome car  looks great & it brings back plenty of good memories for me aswell...mainly me getting left for dead by them in the twistys!! :driving:

Show us the interior! Burberry style cloth and a tape deck? :)
(also love the Pug 1.9  )

How very dare you :) . The interior is one of the best ever. Black and red quartet checked seats with red carpet. Sadly the rear seat has been destroyed by the sun. The bolsters on both front seats have vanished and the drivers seat is worn right through in several places. It's on the to do list.

Looks can be deceiving. I'm discovering a new patch of rust every day at the moment. The N/S inner wing is rusted through and the front chassis leg is looking a bit iffy. I'm meeting a guy who builds 205 rally cars next week to discuss fixing this. Little bits of surface rust on the roof but otherwise not bad. I have to be realistic about the age of the car and the shed money I paid. I'm lifting the carpets tonight so fingers crossed there is a floor underneath

1.6 is leant to be a better drive than the 1.9 no?

SOme say it is, some say it isn't. To be honest i don't think there's an argument for one over the other. Neither are fast or even quick by todays standards really. Gearing on the 1.9 was more aimed at top speed where as the 1.6 had better gearing for tearing around the twisty bits. lots of people put the 1.6 box in the 1.9. Some also argue that the 1.9 was too much power for the chassis. i can't really see how when it was only about 15bhp more.

It is heavy. But it's a good thing. Some have PAS but I specifically wanted a non PAS model.

I'm pretty sure the wheels have never been refurbed due to the machined centres still being present. The centres are a bit pitted unfortunately. i think the big profile tyres prevent curbing.

I've never been to any kind of car meet. Not sure why. I really should try and i would still qualify what with still having a BMW. i dare say most people would want me to bring the 205 though.

I think everyone that drove one when they were young has a tale of near death. i know i do. Reading all the stories and legends around the car and it's infamous lift off oversteer would be enough to put anyone off owning one. I sometimes think i must have been dealing with death on a daily basis when i was 18 as I drove it like i stole it and had never even heard of lift off oversteer. They aren't as bad as some make out.

That looks in really good condition for its age.Do you know if it has been restored or is it as it left the factory?.
I had a wee MK2 XR2 as my hobby car but sold it when I bought the Z4MR,i wish I hadn't and still miss it,was on sale last year on Ebay from the guy who I sold to
but resisted putting a bid in.

Wow - a REAL hot hatch! Those were the days....!

Torsion bar rear suspension - ripe for getting slammed 8)

Happy memories there with both of those :)

A friend had a 1.9 and put the head from a 405 16v on it. Quite the pocket rocket :)

I had XR2 & 3 too and my mate had a Renault 5 Turbo, as I remember it it was rapid! Were they 1.4 lt Turbo?
