My Cheapo Golf R (updated pics)
Just had this delivered last week. It’s on one of those cheap lease deals. Took 6 months to get here. It was a bit of a punt as it was impossible to find one to test drive. Loads of good reviews in the motoring press and a fair amount of negativity from the forums (usually from people who have never driven one) left me sitting on the fence with my expectations.
Have to say I’m pretty pleased with it.
It’s fast, the steering is nicely weighted in all modes. Still no feel the same as every other electric system i’ve experience including current gen Porsche, it actually feels very similar to the Cayman in that respect. The variable ratio is very predictable and coupled with the haled makes for some ridiculous cornering ability. The kit level is unreal considering I didn’t tick a single box, it’s got more toys than my F20 which had £3k of extras added. The manual gearbox is one of the slickest i’ve experienced, no notches, just slots straight into every gear with a lovely bolt action. Perhaps the biggest surprise is the chassis. It is a lot more engaging and capable than my F20 was and best of all it doesn’t shift about like a 3 year old child bursting for a piss when at speed on a bumpy B road.
Gave it a bath, attempted to remove some of the swirls the dealer saw fit to add. Failed. Apart from the swirls the paints not bad. Hell of a lot less orange peel than BMW.

Very nice - I see that an estate version is coming out too which should sell well - might be tempted as a lower cost Audi S4 replacement !

I agree re the quad exhausts though - same on Audi S3 - it just seems too small a body to justify - can't help thinking it's design and fashion led rather than being more powerful or efficient - plus it's more to keep clean ! Not a deal breaker though.

Its the right number of exhausts isn't it? One per cylinder?

Not sure I understand you Aquazi. Don't think Skoda get the EA888 (may well have that completely wrong). Seat do but it's 280bhp in the Cupra. Think it's the same as the Golf in the S3 but for some reason that car has met with lukewarm reviews at best.
I can understand the Leon Cupra 280 being very different being FWD (tbh I would have picked that over the golf had it been the same price). I just don't get why the S3 has ended up being so different when it's essentially the same car in a different frock.
Yeah, they are meant to get some stupid figures with a remap or even a box. I think Top Gear magazine clocked the 0-60 of a standard DSG at 4.5 instead of 4.9. However, i'm sure Autocar or one of that lot couldn't get the 4.9 so god knows... not worth caring about when picking up the shopping TBH

Re: My Cheapo Golf R
well that's maybe logical - but does that mean quad pipes are wrong on a 6 cylinder - or would it need 6 exhausts ? my V6 S4 has 4 - that's probably wrong too (and they are a bu88er to keep clean ) - seem to recall such a pic just like that some time ago on the forum - let's not go there again eh ? Whatever, it's still a nice, very capable car !Maniac wrote:Its the right number of exhausts isn't it? One per cylinder?

Re: My Cheapo Golf R
Knowing I'm a VW fan my neighbour told be recently there were amazing lease deals on Golf R's as a couple of his work colleagues have them, I have to say I'm tempted to look into it.

Re: My Cheapo Golf R
You won't get them any more. VW pulled them pretty sharpish when the numbers started getting out of hand.
