Toyota Supra V8 build
I thought some of you may want to know about a project i am working on at the moment. Its for a best mate of mine Chris and it is as the title suggests. Chris and i have a workshop space on a farm and we spend most weekend and some evenings working on our cars together. It works really well as i am much better at fabrication and Chris is very good with cars.
So Chris brought a nail of a supra for less than £2k in the summer. It was brought from a very dodgy fella and it had seen better days. It had a long list of problems!! The biggest on being a bottom end knock. Well that's what the guy selling the car thought! It came with some nice bits on the car and had been made ready for drifting.
Who ever had done work on the car before us didn't really know what they where doing!! The bottom end knock turned out to be the fly wheel not bolted on properly. Literally 2 bolts fell out when we took the gear box off. And the other bolts where all finger tight. This is really not good news!! It had mangled the clutch and damaged the fly wheel. The suspension had been lowered by the tried tested and failed method of just cutting the springs So much of the summer was spent putting right and making the car safe.
We had a drifting day planed at Santa Pod in September this was our dead line. We had to fix all the above problems and fit a new wiring loom. Again the dodgy DIY mechanic had cut so much needed and useful stuff out of the loom it was a right off. We worked really hard and got the car done. Chris is a bit of a drifting hero (in my eyes) We did the day (my first drifting experience and i got hooked) the car performed really well and all the work we had done paid off. But it was very apparent that the engine had seen better days and was massively underpowered.
So a plan was formed.... Options where looked at but Chris chose what he could afford. The search started for a Lexus 400 dog ugly luxury barge. This comes with an all aluminum 4.0l v8 the weight is about the same as the steel block straight 6 we have taken out. BHP is not much more but there is a massive gain in Torque. The eventual plan is to tun a twin remote turbo set up on the car with 600bhp and about the same torque number. This is really interesting to me as I want to be running a similar single turbo set up in my car some time soon.
So by February the 28th the first show at Santa Pod next year. We have to be done the car had a few its of bad body work. But these are about sorted now and the car should be painted in our spray booth this week. The engine has been test fitted and plans made for engine mounts. So these will be made and the custom plenum finished and the engine in just after Christmas. We will also be chopping the bell housing off the old auto gearbox. and cutting and welding that onto a five speed BMW M3 gearbox. So by the time we have to go back to work the only work left will be electrical and body work fitting.
The Toyota electrics are being ditched for a very posh Haltech engine management and dash set up. and then lots of checking and shaking down. Chris will be running drift taxis if you fancy a go in the car we made come along. And if you want to watch a guy learn and spin a z4 come along and have a laugh at me in a play pen I have set myself the goal of being good enough to run the z4 as a drift taxi by the last show of the year (wish me luck)
A few pictures of how the car sat last night.and some of the work we have done.
the arch is cut away and welded back up due to damage. Then the over arch riveted on.

Thanks Tom its been fun. Actually much more fun than working on my car. I guess its knowing when we find a problem it wont cost me money!
Yeah its a big place in the spring we plan on spending some time painting the floor. Putting in more lights and sockets and running an air line around the building. We are both getting fed up with tripping over extinction leads and air lines.

Haha yes I bet, are there any people living by or is it somewhere (secret obviously) where you could crank the music up in whilst you work? Some racing posters and garage posters would be cool, I'm jealous as you can tell

Wow, very very nice. I do love the Supra's! The workshop looks great too, very jealous.
I'll certainly come along for a ride your z4 drift taxi. New paint job maybe?

It must be great to work in a workshop that size and with a ramp
The Supra project looks fun and hopefully not to expensive, reminds me of my youth when we planted a Rover V8 into an Mk1 Escort for stage rallying. All you need now is Guy Martin come around to help with a mug of tea in hand.

Re: Toyota Supra V8 build
Liam i am never painting my z4 again!!
The lift has changed our lives in ways we never thought posible!! The best thing in the workshop by a long way. It took us 45minutes to get the prop and gearbox out the supra and the clutch and fly wheel striped. It would probably have been hale a day and lots of swearing without it!! Nice v8 in a mk1 bet that was fun!!
Thanks Gregg my car is about done at the moment. And the house has had no work done for a while. Mrs Monkey tells me i need to change that next year So not as much car work over spring and summer Just lots of track and drifting days

Given previous trends 1 of 2 ways:simonlpearce wrote:Do love a good build thread and very interested to see how things progress.
1) Take donations from the forum, spends months cutting holes in a prefectly nice car, fill the holes back in with filler, cut more holes, rattle can paint job, put the car on ebay
2) ask for lots of advice, ignore it all and drop the car off at a dodgy mechanic, leave the forum and never return

Re: Toyota Supra V8 build
Lol - i somehow get the impression this one might be somewhat different given the OP has a decent level of mechanical/engineering understanding so can appreciate what is required to get things working.
I think a twin setup is somewhat ambitious mind you, but only because i don't personally understand it. I haven't a clue how the management side of things works, though it has been done and im sure with some research and advice from those in the know, it should be relatively achievable.

Re: Toyota Supra V8 build
Yeah i should hope this ends up a little better than the other 2! The body work is about done in regards to fitting bits. It will be primed this evening or tomorrow. Then hopefully finished before the Christmas.
The twin Turbo set up is basically just each bank running a turbo. Instead of having them under the bonnet they will be in the boot. Lots of people doubt the idea and say it will have lots of lag. But with a 4.0l V8 or a 3.0l straight 6 its not like a 2.0l high pressure turbo build. And the pipe work from the boot works as an intercooler and has about the same volume a decent intercooler would have.
The ecu is a complete stand alone and we have a really well known and very well respected tuner working on that. Just so happens to be a long time friend to Chris. I shall be having many long chats with him about M54b30 tuning and what he can do.

I'm sure it will! It's the difference between competence and ignorance, and you have buckets of the former
