FROM 35is to a 440i (The Long Way Round)
My VO 35is was coming up to three years old this July and I spotted a new (Pre-Reg March 16 5 miles on the clock) 35is at Sytner Nottingham in late April. Same colour - similar spec - few quid a month more. Decided to make the change as the 35is ticked all the boxes! To cut a very long story short, I was unhappy with the car on collection as I'd agreed the deal without seeing the car (it was brand new) as the car hadn't been prepared as well as expected. Having brought it home to Bolton the Comfort Access was found to have a fault. The result being the 35is was collected and a 420D M Sport convertible left in its place whilst matters resolved.
Several weeks later and the required part for the Comfort Access had still not arrived. Decision made to reject the car but problem being my old 35is had gone having been sold within a few days. To cut another very long story short, with help from Sytner and BMW Customer Service (who were brilliant) and due to me being impressed with the 4 Series Convertible, I found that Sytner Nottingham had a new (Reg'd May 16 - delivery miles) 440i M Sport with lots of additions (Head Up Display - Heated Everything - Harman Kardon HI-Fi - etc ..) and was able to agree a deal that essentially meant we were all reasonably happy.
Picked the 440i up on Wednesday the 15th June. Friday 17th on the ferry from Hull and then a three day drive over the Alps and Italian Lakes to Florence. After a week in Tuscany, there was then a drive back across the South of France returning to the UK on Friday 1st July. The 440i is well and truly run in after the trip and the performance, economy and general overall "drive" of the car is very impressive. Plus, there was a lot more space for the French wine! I miss my 35is as it truly was/is an impressive car. However, the 440i gives me a similar smile when pushed as the sound of the 6 cylinder and the pops of the exhaust are not far behind that of the Z.
Pretty sure I'll be back in a Z4 at some point and will remain an interested member of the Forum. I'll also try and still get along to the North West Meets as long as you don't mind I'm not in a Z!
*If anyone's interested I plan to sell my E89 BMW Fitted Car Cover - a set of BMW 35is Floor Mats which are like new as only used for a couple of weeks and a BMW Z4 Key Ring in a case. I'll advertise the items in the Buy & Sell over the coming days and provide photos.

Cheers Andy. You're right about the photo of the Z. It was coming down the south side of the Galibier last July. Weather was great! Thanks for the info re photo account. I do miss the Z but very impressed with the 440i so far.

Did you get the wind deflector? it makes a huge difference and is actually better than the air spoiler in the Merc

Nice! The spec of mine included the convertible Comfort Pack so has the heated seats - steering wheel - air scarf - wind deflector (nicely stored behind the rear seat when not in use). I had an E93 convertible (3.0d) some years ago and had really liked the car but recall the wind deflector was extra and had to live in the boot! Big improvements all round on the 4 series compared to the old E93.sars wrote:Me too, probably the best car I've hadObs-Com wrote:Yea - I like the Estoril Blue almost as much as Valencia Orange! Me neither! It was only the issues with the new Z that led on to the 440 or I would have still been in the club!Z4M-2006 wrote:Ian!!

The 440 is nice though - a lot more practical/economical and drives/sounds great. I guess it was meant to be???

BACK IN A Zed: Having enjoyed the 440 for a little over 12 months and had three fabulous drives over the Alps to Italy in it, decision made to let it go as it was spending too much time in my garage between Euro trips. We have a daily drive that's shared for work so decided to sell the 440 and buy myself something make better use of that wasn't costing me money every month!
Got what I wanted for the 440 and found myself an 07 plate 2.5si with very good spec, that's been well cared for with full history and only 45000 on the clock! Had it a few weeks and my car OCD already kicking with a lot of time spent getting the car up to my standard and presentation. The previous owner obviously looked after the car but unfortunately used a little too much silicon based cleaner on it! The car itself drives really well and the low mileage is reflected in the general "feel" of the car which is very impressive. Already had the MV Alloys refurbished and Michelin PS4's put on and added the SS exhaust tips.
I'll add some photos in the coming weeks and look forward to getting up to one of the North West meets again to see some old faces and pick some brains regarding the E85. Plan is to keep this as a weekender so mileage will remain low but it definitely will be going on a Euro trip over the Alps next year as its great fun to drive and a little more practical in the boot department that my E89's!
I'm feeling the 2.5si is a keeper currently but having seen the photos of the 2018 Z4/5 (whatever its going to be called?) I can feel another mid-life crisis taking over and the new car being irresistible when available. It looks stunning!!!
