Am I mad - considering Abarth 124 Spider...
Personally I would wait for the MX5 RF, it wins hands down for looks alone.

Dear OP
You're not mad - any petrol-head would consider this car.
As a fan of Italian cars (as well as some of the German ones!) I can't helping thinking that the black bonnet/hood is an Abarth signature and should be compulsory on this one.
There is too much homage to the original to ignore it...
(Perhaps even the smaller engine. After all, that's where Abarth started)
Just my 2p, of course.

Nice - and cheaper than the Abarth by the look of it (sport nav manual version).TitanTim wrote:Personally I would wait for the MX5 RF, it wins hands down for looks alone.

But I can't figure out where the roof goes when retracted?

Mx5 all day long... looks better, drives better and will have a huge and i mean huge aftermarket scene.

Its not a full convertible but a fastback so only the roof panels stow away in the well behind the driver as in the softtop, the rear section/window moves out the way and then back in place.enzed4 wrote:Nice - and cheaper than the Abarth by the look of it (sport nav manual version).TitanTim wrote:Personally I would wait for the MX5 RF, it wins hands down for looks alone.

For the price, a beautiful looking car IMHO and I think Mazda will struggle to keep up with initial demand.
A certain future classic, reminds me of sports cars of the 60's
It makes the FIAT look dull as hell.

I used to own an X/19, similar design, but I had to store the roof panel under the bonnet, that's why I was asking how this one worked. Very clever design (or, just more things to go wrong )TitanTim wrote:Its not a full convertible but a fastback so only the roof panels stow away in the well behind the driver as in the softtop, the rear section/window moves out the way and then back in place.enzed4 wrote:Nice - and cheaper than the Abarth by the look of it (sport nav manual version).TitanTim wrote:Personally I would wait for the MX5 RF, it wins hands down for looks alone.

Same here with my old MK1 MR2 T Bar which the butress rear roof section and lift out roof glass panels which were stored behind the seats. Thing is all cars these days are complicated but I would still be happy with the MX5 even if the roof was broken.enzed4 wrote:I used to own an X/19, similar design, but I had to store the roof panel under the bonnet, that's why I was asking how this one worked. They're nice looking cars, not sure about the black bonnet personally.
In the UK the MX-5 is a bit cheaper and better equipped. It is an MX-5 under the skin (FIAT engine though). I would imagine it would be a pretty rare car in NZ.
Cheers, Dave

I think 'Evo' magazine have done a comparison article and the MX5 comes out as a more dynamic and enjoyable drive. . . .might be worth a read through.
In terms of looks I would be waiting for the MX RF - crikey that looks good! From the side looks like a Dino Ferrari and reminds me a little of the Toyota 2000GT of James Bond fame.

This one was at the Queens Sq meet in Bristol last month
Is smaller than it looks in pictures and although front and back are different, from the side there is no mistaking its Mazda MX5 origins

You say you prefer the interior of the Fiat, but the interiors of both cars are the same. I was surprised myself when I compared.
Supra twin turbo, great in a straight, rubbish around twistys
NSX, pretty cool but no heated seats and can't get top down
Z4 23i sdrive, now gone, got the wrong car, need more power.
Z4 35is loved and missed
Z4 M40i one word sums it up Wow!
