Having owned two of these beasties, as the title of the thread suggests, surely the best £1000 car ever!
Merlot 2.2i SE, so far new discs and pads, seats replaced, Cam cover replaced, Roof now fixed, new diff x3, new halfshafts, new drop links and other bouncy bits,

So as long as you can get rid before it requires at least as much again spent on it.

1k car will not get you much.. it's more of a 2.5-3k car ;) they're decent if you don't mind economy and mad oil consumption(I know it's by design)

imo it's only a matter of time before they start appreciating. I'd love an R3 and still considering one after my coupe.

£500 road tax + 18mpg = not cheap.
But agree it's a lot of car for the money.

Yep I'd of bought one some time ago if I had garage space, would make a fun winter weekend car. Problem with them is they are expensive to run. Road tax and petrol are similar to running an ///M, as a daily. :o

I bought a new one in 06, great fun to drive & a quirky choice with the rotary engine & suicide rear doors :driving:

I had one. Fun but after a while the lack of torque and 400bhp economy for 200bhp power starts to irritate. Great on an empty road. Horrible in traffic. Engines ok as long as you know the ropes in looking after it. They are at rock bottom though so little or no depreciation helps offset running costs. 2k+ really for a decent one but yes a lot of car for little money. People often surprised when you tell them what you paid for it. Good UK forum for support.. not as good as this one though :D

We looked at these years ago and Im sure that the tax changed in April 2006 and the cars after this date were the higher tax cost.
Was put off by the scare stories of engines only lasting 15k and being difficult to sell on. Dealers we spoke to said they wouldnt touch them.

That's right, mine was a birthday present to myself & registered at the beginning of march-another couple of weeks and the tax would have been double :o

Engine issues were due to several factors. Essential to have a strong ignition system with several aftermarket mods available now. Crap coils were a factor but have since been revised, but recommended now to change at 30k even though never listed as a service item. Around 400 quid. Plugs and leads must be changed regularly. Plugs about 100 quid. Most dont recommend the oil Mazda uk tell you to use and the change intervals were too long. I stuck to 6 months or 3k mile oil changes. There are engines out there with 6 figure mileages and no rebuilds. Buy one with a good compression test result and do the research on how to look after it and it will be fine. Oh... and the other annoyance was not switching it off when cold as it can flood the engine. Often moving the car perhaps out of someones way means a trip round the block to warm the engine so you can switch it off again. On the positive side its recommended to red line the engine (9500 rpm) once a day (once warmed) at least to keep the damaging carbon away. These engines loved to be revved, in fact driving like miss daisy in one does more harm.. :driving:

It's more like 60k and 1.8k for rebuild, aka engine out.. rebuild and back in with warranty. Quite a few garages specialise in rotaries..! There's a lot of noise about the reliability.. but the reality is that if you know what the engine requires and you treat it we'll, it'll go on for ages. It's a different kind of ownership to your usual car and I'd go as far as calling it a proper enthusiasts car not something everyone can buy and enjoy.
