XJS Celebration..should I???

Post by Bluecat » Wed Jun 14, 2017 4:24 pm

Anyone had any experience of these. I have always wanted one and am thinking of going to see a 1996 82000 mile example. Going into this with eyes wide open as I believe these cars though galvanised can rust particularly under the windscreen. Any other advice much appreciated :driving:

I have a '92 4.0 XJS and if it's got rot under the windscreen then I wouldn't go near it. It's likely to leak and it isn't an easy fix. Only bottom half got the treatment and it still rusts. My front subframe suspension mount failed and if you can find one replacing is a big job.

The electrics can be a nightmare as it was a Ford owned company at the time. That said if it's in very good condition and has been well cared for it won't necessarily be a money pit but be aware things aren't cheap to replace and sometimes are very scarce.

Thanks I've looked at the Kwe website re the windscreen rust. This one has the telltale signs but it's up for 8k so the owner may be willing to come down to cover the windscreen out rust repairs??

I think you'll find that a decent repair will be big bucks.

I think time has been kind to the XJS. When they first came out, I thought they were not good looking at all, but I suppose at the time everyone compared them to E Types, Nowadays I think they look quite nice, particularly the Celebration model.

I once owned a 5.3 ltr v12 1989 XJS absolutely loved it but so thirsty and rust killed it have often considered a celebration model but never got round to it :D

I hit the the top speed of about 145mph on a certain motorway in a certain country late at night and the coputer said i was getting 6 miles per gallon :o

Nowhere near as nice to drive cf XK8 -buy one of those instead if you want a classic jag coupe for less money and a lot more reliable and less prone to rot
