1967 Ford Mustang

Post by Richard! » Tue Aug 08, 2017 9:08 am

Its been a little while time since I last posted on this forum.  I still have my Z4 its running great, recently got some new front calipers.
Thought I'd share this in case anyone is interested.  I have recently purchased a 1967 Ford Mustang coupe.
This is something i've been looking at getting for a long time, now the moment has come :)

The car was from Louisville Kentucky.  It was originally painted Wimbledon White with a black vinyl roof.  Around 2009 the car was restored.  It was repainted in Brittany blue and the engine rebuilt.
The engine is a 289 v8 with a 3 speed automatic gearbox.

So far with the help of Patrick my brother, we have made a number of small fixes and upgrades.

See more about those here: www.mustang67.co.uk

At the weekend installed new dampers all round. Drives so much better now.

The audio system is well err, not great.  Currently it has some horrid Kenwood head unit that doesn't suit the car at all.  Sadly the console was cut up to fit the modern head unit.  I plan to revert to a classic looking head unit with modern functions.
Speaker wise it has two 6x9 speakers on the rear shelf, the audio quality is so bad that I don't turn any music.  ( not that its audible at the moment since the car has a straight through exhaust :P )

While the sound of the engine is great, long term my hearing won't be happy. So going to be replacing the exhaust and installing a pair of Varex silencers, best of both loud and quiet.

Gorgeous! Did you import it yourself or buy it in the U.K.?
I'm a big fan of '60s/early '70s American muscle cars, and that's probably the best looking one of them all, and iconic to boot. I hope to own a 426 Hemi (7.0l) Plymouth Barracuda, '70, '71 or '72 some day as that's my favourite of the lot.
Currently zedless :(

My all time favourite is the Plymouth Superbird, not to everyone's taste but then again I also like marmite😄

In car audio? That should be a gramophone player, surely!

The car was imported by someone else. I spent a long time looking for one and went to see quite a few.
One of the places was an importer, who has new ones come in all the time. You essentially buy one and they modify it for UK use. They guy that imported my one did it mid last year with the intention to sell on. My main requirement was a solid body. I wanted a car I could use right away, upgrade & fixup as needed mechanically. Didn't fancy the idea of dealing with a lot of rust. In particular the cowl grill, if thats rusty its a huge job to fix.

I'm certainly on the resto mod line. I'm happy to change to non-stock items if its an improvement. First thing I did was add an electric fan as it would over heat in traffic. Gonna be adding 3 point belts all round (currently no belts in the back) The audio install will be as stealthy as possible, want to try and make it look as original.

Sensible changes there. Seatbelts make sense, as does a modern fan to cool the engine. On my 1964 MGB I also put radial tyres as the crossplies it should have had were awful! I also changed the electrics to an alternator with negative earth, and had brighter headlights & stainless steel exhaust. Apart from that, it was standard.

Glad you are not going to bling it up, that would be criminal!

Only thing that will be changing on the outside will be the wheels. Although I really like the ones on there I need slightly larger ones to fit the Wilwood disc brakes I plan to install. The current ones are 14", the new ones will be 15", so only a little larger. The tyres will still be big and bubbly with white text. Certainly want to maintain the stock look.

I'll need to look at the headlights at some stage. I think candles would be just as good as they are at the moment :P
