My Z4 has a full main dealer history and I quite fancied keeping it that way whilst trying to keep the costs down. It needs an oil service so I called Peter Vardy and asked for a price if I supplied my own oil and filter which I had already purchased. £189 if they supply the oil and £156 if I do but they wont stamp the book as they didn't use BMW parts. What a rip off. I could easily save £156 by doing it myself.

IMO E85/E86 Z4s are now too old to be worrying about putting new BMW stamps in the book - anyone looking to buy your car in the future is more likely to be impressed by evidence of it being worked on by an independent specialist or an enthusiast owner.

It's a very low mileage car (22,000) with full main dealer history. It might have been nice to keep it this way but it probably wouldn't make much difference on resale. Will see what the local independents. say. I could easily do it myself but would like a stamp in the book from someone reputable.

£190 for an oil change and a quick wash, that’s a healthy profit margin there! I think I paid £40 for 7 litres of BMW LL04 oil and a Mann filter, and did it myself in 30 minutes.

As above, perhaps get prices from a reputable indy, I know personally that a FBMWSH wouldn’t matter to me if there’s evidence of the car being well maintained, either by a garage or the owner.

Receipts are important too - shows what exactly has been used, quality etc. If you are competent enough just buy one of these and stamp your own book. http://r.ebay.com/WS7GKC At least you know it's been done right!

Hmmm, not seen those stamps before. Interesting idea. Could save myself a bundle.

Local Indy is going to do it for £66 with me supplying the oil. They don't normally allow customers to supply their own oil but the owner is an old friend. Result.
