I wouldn't worry too much. Plenty of cars in collections get left for many years and next to no mileage and seem to be OK. Obvious what's happened is not ideal but I'd rather have that than no oil change in 4 years and 40k. I don't think you said how the mileage was spread. Was it a fairly even 2k or so a year or did it do most of it in the first year and it's been parked up ever since. I think if it was me I'd prefer the later.

thanks Mack - it was 2.5k spread over about 4 years. you've put my worries to bed - oil change booked anyway for Wednesday so will leave it parked up until then and use the Mrs' Polo lol

The car runs lovely (only done 60k miles) and it's quiet as a mouse so with fresh oil will be even nicer :)

The cars have long life oil .. I’d imagine most owners just go by the service interval display anyway ..

It’s not hard use and if the car has evidence of a caring owner then I wouldn’t worry

Mine had its first service at 3 yrs on it’s MOT ., it has survived another few years without any issues

I think though as they get older they will need more tlc

Had my oil change today - this is what’s left of the oil filter! Might help also explain my poor oil consumption too!

My dash indicator keeps telling me on startup that I have loads more miles before next service due but I have changed oil at least 4 times since it would have been reset. Guidance (Parkers??) seems to suggest that sticking to BMW service intervals is not good if you want to keep the car in tip top condition and should be regarded as the very maximum rather than the norm.
