4 years but only 10k since last oil change

Post by chrisgreen » Tue Nov 07, 2017 7:14 pm

Just checked the service book of my newly purchased z4 - last oil change was in end of 2013 but it’s only done 10k miles. Obviously will get it booked ASAP to change but will there be any lasting damage/ should I be worried?

Hi, should be ok with that mileage, if it was 20k+ I would be concerned-changing it asap is the right thing to do

It'll be fine especially if those miles have been evenly spread out over the years. I'd be inclined to get the oil changed before you thrash it tho.

Phew that’s a relief - thanks. Yes miles been spread out fairly evenly - around 2.5k per year

I'd give it a change then give it another one 6 months or 5k miles later, just to be sure. If you're concerned then you could always have a sample analysed.

The 3.0 litre is a great engine but pretty basic as engines go, it will be absolutely fine

Get it changed - oil degrades over time - 4 years is well over what it’s meant for - oil changes are so cheap why would you not :)
Z4 now sold :(

Oil changes may be cheap for Z4's and many other cars, but certainly not for my V10 M6. I just spent 250.00 + tax for oil and filter change at a BMW dealer. Ten liters of 10W60 synthetic. I just bought the car on Sep.13, and for all I know, it may have had fresh oil in it at the time, but I had no history so I would not take a chance. My car will not get many miles put on it next summer, and I will again change the oil before it goes into winter storage, just as I have done with all my nice cars in the past. When I got it, the M6 told me it would require an oil change in another 17,000 KMs, by the way. But my Z4 was always telling me that I had another zillion kms before requiring service.
Current cars: 2013 Honda Civic EX (daily driver, 55,000 KM) + 2003 Mazda MX-5 SE (Titanium Grey, with 22,000 KM) + 2006 BMW M6 (Indianapolis Red Metallic, just turned 67,000 KM)
First sports car was 1963 Morgan 4/4 in 1964.Image

Nothing is cheap when you go to a dealer...!

If you've got 10L of oil there's a substantial outlay there alone.

Oil will be ok but I would be worried about the filter element, you may find its gone brittle and turned into cornflakes in the bottom of the housing.

it may just be a case of a lazy mechanic/owner not updating the book...... or not.

at 12k you will be fine after a flush.

Maybe the last owner did the changes themselves!
But worth changing for peace of mind.
