Slight rubbing on none M roadster with 224s

Post by RyanB88 » Wed Nov 15, 2017 9:10 am

Hi all

2006 E85, standard m sport suspension

When going over some bumps (especially on and off drives at slow speeds) i appear to be getting rubbing on the front and back. Currently I’m running standard ///M tyre sizes, so was wondering what were the best tyre sizes to upgrade to to make them thinner and hopefully stop the rubbing?

Thanks in advance
Z4 now sold :(

225/40/18 front
255/35/18 rear as per oem sizes

I know DLV runs this setup and has zero rubbing

Seems a bit strange this, paricularly as your getting rubbing on the rear as well. Most folks only seem to have any issues on the front

Your tyres will probably be the reason, M has very "fat" setup when you think about it.. so there's a lot of sidewall. I'd say go standard Z4 non m 18 size and you'll be fine, I run 224s with 255/225 setup as above comment mentioned with 0 rubbing.

Yeh there is a lot of sidewall! If I was to put standard none M tyre sizes on, would they fit? As the wheels are wider front and rear so the tyres would be quite stretched?

Theyre only wider at the rear at 9 inch instead of 8.5. Both fronts are 8 inch.
However the M and the 3.0 run the same width tyres front and rear so no issues.
Not sure why your having issues as plenty have run M wheels/M tyres on a 3.0 with no issues, does seem a bit strange. Is you car definitely not lowered?

Yup, I run those sizes in Pzeros, no rubbing at all, even with 15mm spaces on front. The previous ///M sized tyres did rub at the front, but not the rears. Have your head your alignment checked?

Mine is also on M sport suspension.

You would buy a set of tyres that are wider for the rears as Jamie_z4 listed in his post above

no not at all, 255 on a 9" is perfectly fine.

here's how mine sits with 255 rear and 225 front.

stock m sport suspension.

Slight rubbing on none M roadster with 224s

Post by Danderton » Wed Nov 15, 2017 10:39 pm

I have 224's on my pre facelift 3.0i (with M springs) but a non M car. I ran the M size tyres for about 2 years and they were fine. May have had minimal rubbing once or twice when going over speed humps, but nothing really noticeable.

The tyres on the wheels were original (manufacture date was 2006) so very cracked. In the interests of safety I decided to change to all 4 tyres and opted to change to standard (non M) tyres.

I went for Avon ZZ5s in 225 40 18 front and 255 35 18 rears (rather than 45 profile fronts and 40 rears).

The main reason I changed profiles was to ensure the rolling radius of the wheel was correct and how BMW intended it, also ensures the speedo is accurate.

Looking back I actually preferred the look of the car with M profiles on it, it filled the arch gap more and looked more aggressive.

Has any of your suspension been updated/replaced? If it's a 2006 car on original suspension there could be a sagging or alignment issue that would remedy the rubbing?

Good shout
Ive heard of front rubbing, but not really at the rear with 3.0 or M standard wheel and tyre combos. Certainly on standard spring's. If a rear coil has snapped though that might explain the rear at least.
