VANOS
Have been noticing a small rattle on start up , from the front of the engine.
Reading on here I decided it was the vanos causing the noise.
Mike, ( ducklakeview ) had done the mod to my exhaust and he mentioned he could do the vanos.
Well today Mike has done the job , big thanks , but this isn’t the only reason for the post.
My 04 zed has only done 64000 miles and I have always been pleasantly pleased with the performance from the 3.0 engine , however the drive home from Mikes , the car has transformed into a sports car, my god there is a whole load of mid range torque .
My point , I’ve known no different as I’ve had the car for 2years but only done 6000 miles. But those of you who have had your car over a number of years have you noticed a drop off in mid range ?
The seals on my vanos pistons where rock hard and passing oil badly !!
Can’t recommend having this job done enough , wether you use Mike or not ,it’s amazing

Mine has a little rattle on start up
I think its as I pull away in 1st gear actually - sounds like something is vibrating or lose in the engine bay. Not given much attention until now

No, the seals on the actual pistons inside the cylinders attached to the front of the camshafts. These are controlled by the solenoids which let the oil in, but as the seals die after as little as 30k, it just gushes back out into the engine and doesn't advance the camshafts. You don't get any errors, although they can rattle a little when cold. What you also don't get is the massive wedge of torque between 2k and 5k that the system was designed to give you. You don't lose out on top end power, just mid range grunt.

Mike,
Is this only on the 3.0? have the 2.2 Jan 2005 reg (End Nov 2004 Production) and was wondering it that has the same issue.
I've just about to turn 60k so thought it would be ok but if it can be an issue and you are ever in the area (Durham) give me a shout please.
Also could the DISA be an issue with my model.
Cheers

2.2 suffers with same problem. Disa valves on all of the M54 engines can lack up and fall apart..Boris wrote: ↑Wed Nov 29, 2017 12:18 am Mike,

Hi, I don’t think the n20 engine is known to have vanos issues-since the n52 engine appeared they seem to have got on top of the seal material used
