E46 space saver

Post by oldgit » Wed Dec 13, 2017 11:55 am

I am going to get rid of the runflat tyres but I would like the security of a spacesaver in the boot.

My existing tyres are 225/50 R16 and the car has a 2.5 engine.

Does anyone know if a 16 inch E46 space saver will fit? I have searched the forum but can't find an answer to this one.

Thank you.

I've checked with my insurers and they have no problem with changing to non-runflat tyres, so I will go ahead.

I would be happy to collect the E46 spare. I am in Longridge, so not far away. When would be convenient for you?

would 16" space savers fit a 3.0i? I would have thought there would be a problem with the size of the brake discs?

So I'm guessing if I did a brake upgrade to a e46 330i it would no longer fit?

That is correct. You need a 17'' spare wheel to clear the 325mm brakes.

I have a spare in my E46 330Ci. This may be 17", I will have to check. Available for sale if required as it won't fit over my front brake upgrade, then again, few wheels do.... :D

Pretty sure it will still fit on the back axle though. So if you have non staggered wheels (i.e. most if not all <18" OEM wheels?) you could fit the space saver onto the rear and transfer a rear wheel to the front in the event of a puncture at the front. If you have staggered 18s then it may be a problem to get the wider rear wheel to fit at the front due to it's width and offset, but I'm sure someone else will be able to confirm this.

Problem is I think may Zed's run 18's... 107, 108, 135, 224. But I agree it would work if anyone was on a square set up of 17's :)

Good luck OP.

I'm planning to ditch my RFTs soon - earlier this year I got a 17" space-saver from a forum member who had sold his Coupe. He said it came out of a 330 E46 as they have bigger brakes than all the other E46s.

I got a jack and wheel-brace too - and you might want to get something to put the full-size wheel in before you put it in the boot! :) (There is actually a BMW part that's basically a nicely-folded big plastic bag - my E46 came with one).
Coupes because stunning!
