does grey or black stereo indicate other spec differences?

Post by Sidewaze Samm » Thu Jun 21, 2018 7:46 am

I'm lining up two or three E85s to go and view this weekend. One is an early model, on an 04 plate and I'm not sure what spec the stereo is.
I know the facelift cars are black fascias with black buttons and are mp3 compatible.
I know some/all pre-facelift cars are grey fascias with black buttons. Are these mp3 compatible?
Are there any fascias in grey with grey buttons? Are these the original ones, and not mp3 compatible?

I'll probably replace with a Kenwood unit anyway, but really just curious to know what I'm looking at. Especially if there were any other mods that came along at the same time as the change from grey to black fascia/buttons.

Was there any?

Cheers

grey stereo spec - and other mods?

Post by Monkeydonkeyratmagic » Thu Jun 21, 2018 9:53 am

There are 3 specs iirc. But they are poverty spec. Just turn it on and see if the door speakers work or make a noise. If not it's cheapo spec. If they do it's the better one. If it's got subs behind the seats it's the best one.

Thanks
But I guess what I really want to know is how the appearance of the stereo unit/buttons changed with the date of the car.
And whether a particular stereo appearance in grey or black is indicative of any other tweaks in the technical spec of a pre-facelift E85?

Edit - thread title changed to be more accurate.

If you have a BLACK Radio/Stereo in your Zed it will play MP3 CDs, if it's grey it won't.

A few pre facelift owners have swapped the head units and facias. So there are one or two grey fronted that are mp3 compatible.

Take a mp3 disk along if you want to test.

So both grey and black units have black buttons?
I'd have sworn I read somewhere about grey units with grey buttons.

Is this what you mean? This is mine. This is a sat nav model but the stereo was the cheapest spec going. Grey unit black buttons. This car is a 54 plate. I didn't come across any old models when I was looking that had grey buttons.
