How many quarts of oil does Z4 3.0 take?

Post by plantkiller » Sun Feb 10, 2008 3:37 am

Greetings,
I just hit 2,000 miles for my 07 Z4 3.0i....
I'm thinking about changing the oil.... it's been almost 6 months since I got it....

What viscocity and how many quarts of oil does the Z4 3.0i take?
(BTW, I tried to do a search and even peruse through the BMW manuals - no luck).

Thanks in advance,
JN

BMW uses a very pure synthetic that is good for around 10,000 miles. Your car should show when the oil change is due right when you start it up. Going against some of the others here on this forum, but if it is under warranty and BMW only wants me to change the oil every 10-15,000 miles, then who am I to argue. If the engine dies do to oil problems, it is on them. Now, once it is out of warranty..... :)

bmw's recommended castrol oil is a 0w-30 and you'll need about 7qts

or Mobile 1 0w-40 european formula(read on the back for BMW approval)

and honestly 7 quart is too much..why couldn't it be like 4.5? Acura MDX with 3.5 liters only takes 4.5 quarts. but 7quarts thats like $50 for just oil!

lol,

Read your owners manual, it states 5w-30 and 6.9 Quarts for the new N52 Engine,

I used Mobil-1 5-30 in my old Z4 N52 with a BMW filter, I would NEVER leave the oil for 10000 miles regardless if they say they can handle it or not,
Esp with a car with no dipstick!

I'd take it in to the dealer for the oil change. It should be covered at no cost as part of the service warranty coverage. My dealer changes mine even if it's only midway until the next oil change.

Plant, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. Just change the oil yourself. No matter how much I love Mr.Ovrkill change @ every 5,000miles too. You should actually buy 8 liters. Use one liter to flush the engine once you've drained all the oil. It's very easy to change your own oil, especially with the oil filter sitting on top. Any kind of 0-w30 should be sufficent but I usually stick with brands like Castrol or Mobil 1. I'll be changing my own oil soon an I'll be sure to take very detailed pictures for everyone. :D

Ok seriously what manuals are you guys reading?

I can't believe so many people are saying so many different things,

From the BMW manual for a 2006 Z4 3.0L N52 Engine, Go to Page 89, Far right 2nd paragraph,
Viscosity Classes
"approved oils belong to the 5w-40 and 5w-30 classes" To exactly quote the manual,
I always used 5w-30 Mobil-1,

Then, Go to Page 110 Capacities, Bottom line of the first paragraph

"Engine with oil filter renewal" US Quarts/liters 6.9/6.5

SO,
You buy 7 quarts and use 6.9 of them (or do what I did seeing as you dont have a dipstick and use the whole 7.0 quarts)

Now why all the confusion?

Thanks for the info, everyone.
I'll be flushing out the engine oil this weekend... I have been using Mobil 1 on all of my vehicles for the last 15 years with no problem.
The car only has about 2k miles, but I got it in August of 07.... So the oil has been in there almost 6 months now.
