Custom 108s and strut brace weld

Postby Adamski - Tue May 29, 2012 3:38 pm

Finally making progress with my "to do" list. Booked the car in tomorrow to have my tyres swapped from my existing 108s to these:

Some prep work:

Poorboys wheel sealant :)

More pics tmorrow after they've been fitted

Whilst the wheels are being done, I'm having the strut brace welded back in place, as it came off its mount earlier this week. The Indy reckons the strut needs to be dropped before he does the weld.... Anyone have a view on this? Is it necessary? :idunno:

Wheels look very familiar to me in concept and design, if a little darker than my latest rendition. They'll look stunning.

I'm not sure I see the need to remove the strut. guess it depends on why he feels it's required - access, remove load, etc.

Custom 108s and strut brace weld

Postby Adamski - Tue May 29, 2012 3:51 pm

The more light there is, the lighter the wheels look :) They can look dark grey in some lights, but light grey when the sun is out

Will check tomorrow about how he's going to do the weld, cheers.

Wheels look awesome!

Dropping the strut would be the safest route, there's some sort of non metallic pad above the spring that's probably not heat resistant. There may be other sensitive bits at the top of the strut I'm not aware of too. OTH, he can't be using much heat to do sheet to sheet welding. If it were me, I think I would leave it in place and manage the heat, using a TIG welder and taking my time.

Looking good - all the recent refurbs on 108s almost makes me wish I'd persevered with mine instead of swapping to 202s.

Just need the interior sorted now

Custom 108s and strut brace weld

Postby Adamski - Tue May 29, 2012 5:21 pm

Find out prices tomorrow. I have a figure of £80 in my head, as I reckon it'll take them an hour to do the tyres. I'll report back, it's a local Indy recommended by a friend. I have already asked "can you fit the tyres without marking the wheels". He said yes, no problem. Tomorrow will either be a good day, or a really bad day

I think the wheels look great and good luck with the weld, I'm sure it will be fine.

They look good Adam, just hope the dark stars don't get lost on your black Z, one reason why like nice safe boring silver wheels :D

This is my first time using Poorboys wheel sealant, the old rims were too far gone

I will report back after a few long runs

I also have Autoglym wheel protector, which I had planned to use. However, my local car specialist now stocks Poorboys products, so I couldnt resist buying some wheel sealent and Black Hole Glaze :)
