ive got the bmw bluetooth in my car and it seems to have gone really really s**t.

basically people complain and the gerenal jist from seval people is.

1.they cant hear me its all crackly
2 they hear me for about 1-2mins and the it goes all crackly
3. its just very very quiet

these faults seem to be the same irrespective of speed/temp/place/how close i am to the mic/how loud i shout

im using a iphone and often am in places fo decent signal quality.

so is it possible the bluetooth unit is broken?
is the bmw bluetooth just a bit s**t from this era?
what else can i do about this?

No software update for E85

I run iphone 4 & now 5 on mine with no probs.

There are several things to consider:

There are 13 generations of ULF modlues fitted. The earlier your car the older the model and worst it performs and less functionality. Version 1 is cr*p. V8 onwards have voice control and way better. I run a gen 12 and it's very good

The original mic was near the mirror and poor quality alongside bad location. There's an upgraded one available and it fits into a replacement cowling on top of the column. Much better voice pickup and quality

The bluetooth antennae is connected by cable to the ULF. Check it's connections. I moved mine to on top of the CD cartridge.

All works really well, but end of the day it's a sports car with soft top so lots of noise at speed.

Is it a simple procedure to upgrade the ULF?

Mine seems to work fine, if a bit sensitive to road noise on the Z4Ms cowl, but would I need any software/firmware/coding to make extra functions work?

Easy job just swap out.
Sits behind the rectangular bulge in the carpaet in the LHS vertical part of the firewall in the boot.

///M should be a later generation so little point unless you can pick up one cheap.

I have all the part numbers somewhere to match to each Generation if you need them.

Thanks.

I'll have a check of what I've got first, as a 1-2 generation upgrade probably isn't worth it.

Also, whilst I'm in the upgrading arena, can you retrofit/upgrade the radio tuner so you have dual tuners for RDC/TMC - as mine has to be tuned to Classic FM to get any traffic information (for the times I've forgotten, or want to double-check my TomTom's info).

I'm not sure on the radio, but agree its a pita. My older X5 had a dual tuner and I never even considered it until the Z4 challenges of tuning arose

thanks for that, no idea what my module is but now i know where it is ill have a look. i have the mic ontop of the steering column cowl too.

this problem happens when the car is stationary egine off in a quiet open air carpark so no road noise at all.

taa laa .....

just trying to decide if its worth it (hence the other thread) i want iphone/samsung connectivity and maybe a satnag upgrade so might be worth looking into a totally new unit that does all and just turning this one off.
