Cost of changing my rear to facelift?

Post by ElegantSpoon » Wed Dec 24, 2008 4:36 pm

Helloo all :D

I've been debating what to do with the rear end of my car. I can't decide on red rears with out the orange indicators, clear rear lights, or to change to the new facelift rears?

I know the bumper needs changing so does anyone know how much it would cost and what else is involved?

Any silver facelift rear pics would be great too!

Thanx!!

You can get the rear bumper pretty cheap off eBay. The issue I seem to have found from searching is that I require some sort of programing to make the lights work. Does anyone know anymore about this? Would a BMW dealer do it?

Thanx again!!

I seem to find lots of threads where people have done this but they never say how they sorted the wiring out!!

Why dont you give Mstyle a ring and see what they say. Sure they'd advise if they thought a sale would pursue.

Further, I personally prefer the bunpers off the old car in comparison to the facelift. Think they suit the car more. The front/rear light design of the new car are the only things BMW improved if you ask me! :fuelfire: :P

I prefer the pre facelift front end by miles but I think the post rear lights look a lot more modern. I think the Mstyle idea might be worth it but I've emailed them before with no joy! Worth a shot though :D

I'll give them a ring as well tomorrow :D

Taking that into consideration and I think it's come up previously too, I think the best way to deal with M Style is to call them rather than email, they've been around for long enough so they should be able to help.

ElegantSpoon, with the wiring it should be straightforward enough, but you do need a new light control module for them to work properly, as per that other thread http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic ... 69#p125969

Try the dealer tomorrow for a price for this 61319146279

Ok I had a good chat with them and if your car is built Jan 2005 onwards then they can fit the new rear for £750 but if its before like me December 2004 then they can't.

They told me they had tried it before but the cost of the light control module, extra wiring, programming and labour meant it cost around £1500 plus the other parts! So they wouldn't be doing it again as the customer pulled out.

What a pain in the ass!!! My cars a month too old

It's a shame that a company can't replicate the newer look rear lights that fit the pre-facelift wiring (with a bumper change of course) If anyone did i'm sure they'll make a fair bit? After all these crappy aftermarket M3 LEDs and Lexus style rubbish then i'm sure it's viable?

Can somebody explain this more? I read this somewhere else, and I don't understand how designing a new set of lights and all the cost associated with that could be less expensive than staying with a design and just making more of them! At any rate, the difference surely couldn't be enough to warrant the change on a premium car?!

Personally, I like both designs no real preference.

I second that! Sadly there doesn't seem to be any alternatives out there! I thought it might be possible to rework the wires at the lights themselves but no.
