Huzee666 wrote: Thu Jun 22, 2017 5:11 pm Really enjoyable read Andy, look forward to your updates ! I admire you, I can't knock in a nail ! Once my Children grew up and began driving themselves I bought my first Z4, a 2004 2.5, totally fell in love with it. Drove it as my daily for two years and slowly but surely it started turning into a money pit, roof motor, electric window, starter, rear springs, the usual stuff. Ended up making the mistake of day dreaming in the local BMW dealership last summer and drove out in a new one. I'm obsessed with her and spent so much of my spare time cleaning her and going on road trips with wifey. Keep up the good work ! Steve

Hi Steve.
Daydreaming and following it through.....sounds perfect to me. :D

Ok. Here we go.
Before the oscilloscope comes out. A few code checks.

Got back to my workshop where the car was abandoned in limp home mode, started it up and ....perfect. What!!

No codes present. Normal power restored. So must be heat related.
New direction then.
Removed top engine cover and disconnected the valvetronic motor here
Image
and switched ignition on.

This is the code that appeared
Image

Exactly what appeared the other day when it went into limp home mode.

Plugged it back in, cleared the code and disconnected the eccentric cam sensor
Image
and switched ignition back on
Here's what appeared
Image

So looks as if the code 2A67 is a check of the electrical continuity check of the valvetronic motor.

Next is a current waveform of it in operation. With and without cam cover,

Andy.

Apologise for bad links. Photobucket have created this problem.
Moving images as we speak. Should start reappearing gradually.

Here's a youtube video of the valvetronic motor removed from the car, connected to a 12V source and a waveform taken of the current it takes.

Considering this is a precision motor, that waveform shows major inconsistencies between commutator segments. Time to order a good secondhand one. New ones from BMW are about 435 + vat. Ordered one at a cost of £38.

Quick update for everybody.

All photos relinked to a new server.

Replacement valvetronic motor fitted and car is perfect!

Been using it regularly over last few weeks and seriously enjoying it

BUT,....................one thing..................the clutch. Horrible. So, ordered an LUK Dual Mass Flywheel and clutch and will fit it starting monday evening. Shouldn't take long, and I will get plenty of photos.

Oh, price? £395 all in. Bargain.

Andy.

Will do my best!
Will try to fit it in next week. 2 BMW's (not zeds) and a ford fusion to do before then!

Hi Andy,
a few weeks have gone by since you reset my steering angle sensor or whatever it was you did.
Just to let you know everything is absolutely fine , couldn't be more pleased with the way the car steers, thank you.

What were your problems before it was reset?

My steering is constantly pulling to one side despite changing all the suspension parts and swapping tyres etc.

A slight stiffness in the straight ahead position, meant I had to make a conscious movement either left or right.
Very annoying but it's all ok now very smooth and no notchiness or stiffness at all.
I was thinking about doing that centric ring adjustment but this has cured my problems
