Once Illegal but now Legal Ram Air Scoops

Post by dans6490 » Sat Apr 23, 2016 8:47 am

I have received an PM this morning from a member on here telling me that what I'm doing with the Ram Air scoops is illegal as they are very similar to one made by a recognised brand.

Now, he is saying that if the company in question see that I'm doing this, they will definitely shut this site down and he's not very happy about it.

What is the consensus of opinion on this? I won't continue them if people genuinely feel it's wrong or the z4 forum will get shut down etc.

All comments welcome

One for the moderators to chew over. I'm no lawyer so really not sure how you (or the forum) stands on copyright infringement? Damn fine job with the scoops Dan - thanks, just sorry its causing you some problems now

What is he/she unhappy about?

You've taken a piece of metal and made a scoop out of it which looked good and then you've offered it to others.

Or are they unhappy because they haven't thought of the idea and been able to help others?

Either way, I wouldn't worry about it. The amount of stuff like detailing gear for example that's decanted/split down etc etc and sold on in unmarked bottles/containers with no COSHH labelling by thousands of forum members on differing sites goes on with no come back.

Sour grapes possibly by an 'unhappy member'? Fabricate him/her a nice metal box to keep his/her tissues in that he/she uses to wipe away the tears you've obviously created. Be careful though, you'll be breaching copyright on a tin box next!!

I'll have the 1st go, is it Vanne who's got his knickers in a twist?

If not, apologies to Vanne.

If so, could you PM Dan the measurements of your tissue box?

Someone has sour grapes and is trying to share you with them fella.

i'd assume it was the same arsehole from the other thread, I run a newcastle utd site/forums (prob the largest tbh) and get legal threats on a daily basis ranging from copyright issues from the premierleague/bbc to super injunctions and the they are exactly that, threats.
Very few have any basis and in any case it's for the site owners to worry about not you :)

Shut the site down :P aye dead on

fact they pm'd you and not just posted in that thread says something as well

You should be incredibly scared and worried.

As said, let the mods mull it over.

Be right  my z4 offends a lot of purists

They're not sold as rpi air scoops, they are ram air scoops, nothing to stop someone making a version for themselves. Otherwise companies like APR etc wouldn't be allowed to make the intake systems they do because they might happen to be like someone else's... No s**t, they're meant to do the same job

I think if the mods were concerned then they'd have let you know ages ago. You only have to ask about knocked off sat nav DVDs on here and the thread gets shut down pretty much immediately (And quite rightly so).

The first step in any legal proceeding would be to threaten you to stop you doing it - which you would, job done. Don't sweat it

From a legal perspective...... The size and shape of the scoop is out of necessity due to the dimensions of the area it has to fit and the position of the airbox.

It is therefore clearly not a design that can be protected by and kind of design registration.

Point this out to whoever messaged you and tell them to stick the threat up their arse!

All you have done is offer your manufacturing expertise to help some forum members save some dosh. A very commendable endeavour IMO

Now weather the scoop actually provides and benefit to the car now that's a different discussion

If its your own design and tooling NOT taken from their design then there is naff all they can do about it but there may be an issue if you have made tooling from one of their items.
I used to have my own fibreglass business making car body kits. I had to alter the design by x% if I took a mould from another manufacturers item.

You could always start selling some very nice paperweights, or some rather fetching coffee table bowls. How many Werthers Originals fit in one?
