Wheel spacers?

Post by ElegantSpoon » Sat Jan 31, 2009 5:16 pm

Evening all :)

Seeing all the pictures of Zs recently with lowering springs and M wheels really makes me want to add some spacers so my 108s come right out to the edge of the wheel arch. I haven't seen anyone mention them on their Z unlike the TTOC where they were one of the first mods people did.

So out of interests has anyone done this? If so what spacers did you use the straight through type or bolt on type?

Thanx in advance for any pictures or info on this!!

You want hub-centric spacers & extended wheel bolts. Rogue Engineering has high quality spacers. I wouldn't put anything over 15mm because of the added strain to the hubs & bolts.

Are these no brand ones suitable?

Sorry but I hate these things with a passion. They put tremendous strain on the bearings, weaken the fixing between wheel and hub (by extending the bolts) and of course add several pounds of unsprung weight to the wheel.

Spacers are not something you want to skimp on. Spend the money and get high quality ones or don't get them at all.

I have almost 13,000 miles on my spacers and no problem with the bearings or anything else for that matter. Do agree about the unsprung weight though. But the car looks better with the spacers on, so it is a good trade off..

Fair enough about quality :)

Are they the correct type though so I know what to look out for.

Got any pics of yours insmanblue?

Well today was a great day to wash the car and take pictures. I hope posting pix came out well. Anyway, I do not recall the specific brand of wheel spacers I bought, but the front is 10mm and the rear is 15mm. I think 12mm would be perfect for the front. Mine could stand to be brought out more. But it still looks good imo.

Z looks great insmanblue :D

Thanx for the pics! I think the spacers make the wheels look much better. I do think the rears could come out a touch too just to make it perfect

Do you remember if you've got the bolt on or bolt through type?

insmanblue - I may not like the technology of wheel spacers, but they do look good on the car

Why don't the manufacturers just change the wheel offset or axle width slightly, why leave the wheels tucked into the arches?

I know the same could be said of a few things otherwise there would be no modding community but not sure why they don't sort this one out.

I agree wondermike! It always seems odd to me too!! They go through the effort of making the wheels fill the arches properly then resses them back! The TT is the same, the common was 10-15mm front and 20-25 rear. Looks much better :D
