Would anyone be interested in having their back box modified?

Post by Ducklakeview » Sun Jul 24, 2016 10:01 pm

As above. I've recently modded my own box, and I LOVE it, noisier, but not too noisy, with a DEEP burble, and just enough pops and bangs on the overrun.

See thread here; viewtopic.php?f=2&t=88783

I reckon this is a much better mod than a backbox delete, as all of those I had listened too were WAY too noisy, and in my opinion just sounded like an exhaust that had a hole in the pipe. That, and the possible performance losses from reduction in back pressure made up my mind to do this mod. I'm also convinced that my car actually now does feel a little bit more lively, not a lot but it's definitely there. I put this down to the fact that my box is now acting like a proper performance box, and (correctly) still giving some back pressure, but with improved flow due to the new pipework.

Externally, the box is unchanged, apart from a small section in the bottom, which needs cutting out for access when welding, this is seam welded back in, and all of the other work is done from the top of the box, and is therefore invisible. This should help come MOT time, as the "factory" silencer is still present. I also think this would help come resale time, as I can't imagine anyone preferring the "std" sound. This, is how the 3.0L should have sounded from the factory!

Video of modded box...

I reckon there is about 6 hours of work involved in modding the box, the first one took me a couple of days. I now have a box from a 3.0i pre facelift which I can modify and swap out on an exchange basis with anyone who wants to fit their own, I would supply quality fitting sleeves of the correct diameter. Alternatively, I would be happy to fit/swap the box FOC, which takes about 45 mins.

I can also offer this mod for other models, as the principle is the same, although I may need to order in different diameters of stainless tube and flexi if they aren't the same.

Price wise, I am looking at £275 on an exchange basis including delivery to you and the fitting sleeves, or fitted for free at mine. I would probably need an additional £100 pending return of the unmodded box, which would then be refunded, this would be in case a box was not returned, therefore breaking the chain, as another would have to be purchased to start again.

With a backbox delete alone ranging from £100-£200 alone from what I've read, I think this option is good value bearing in mind the amount of work involved in modding the box, and IMO it's a much superior solution..

Thoughts/questions anyone?

Mike

I'd be very interested in this... Although I get married next month, so it would have to be Septemberish for me.

As mentioned in the other thread, I have the back box off my 3.0si already cut off and in my boot. Happy to be a guinea pig.

Conscious that shipping back and forth could be problematic/costly though?

Shipping each way should be no more than £10. That's what it cost me to have my other box collected and delivered next day. I just had cardboard folded around it and lots of tape!

Happy to do this for you, but need to order some more stainless flexi and collars..

I could mod the one I have and send it to you, needing yours back once fitted, so car not off road?

If you are competent with the spanners it's a 30-45 min job with the sleeves I'd supply. Alternatively any exhaust place could swap it for you, in probably 30 mins or less.

This is very tempting Mike, I've looked at all kinds of back box options to release more sound from my 3.0si and your mod seems to tick all the boxes (excuse the pun  )
You're close to me too (I'm in Preston).

What is it like on a motorway/A road?
That would be my main concern the drone/noise level on a road trip rather than a blast through twisties or even using it on local urban roads.
