Better reception? Sure!

Better balance of the car? Bloody hell! (is that syntax correct?)

Safer on the eyes in case you are drunk and stumble into the car? Uhhh, we'll go with that.

But, BUT, for the ultimate answer as to why the whip is better than a stub (besides what the ladies will tell you), I present this:

https://books.google.com/books?id=Q9YDA ... pon&f=true

Click on the link and be AMAZED that you can use your whip antenna as a WEAPON!! What are with the stub, throw it? Probably can't even get a full grip on it...

After reading the article, I may even retro fit one of these on it:

en garde!

Bad business! :o

Due to this forum there's renewed appreciation of the whippy which is good, but it does mean we have to be on our guard!

Whippy better than a Stubby !

Sure is,
I recon that the Whippy is actually a special tool provided by BMW. The purpose for which it is provided is to clean out the bl---y drain holes under the roof motor.
Otherwise
1.It would not be as long as it is as a Stubby works fine.
2.It is thin ,obviously to poke up the drain hole, the thicker end is only there to stop you poking yourself in the eye and may need bashing off when used for the first time.
3.It is provided with a spiral down the length to enable you to twist it and pull all the sh-- out of the drain.
4.It is mounted on the nearside wing to constantly remind you that you need to take it off and poke it up the drain hole on that side.

Hope this resolves the reasoning for the provision by BMW
