a BMW 640d tried it on . . .

Post by Marlon » Mon Mar 20, 2017 4:19 pm

Was driving behind a 640d convertible yesterday wondering how fast they were, he had spotted me and I was holding my revs at 3k waiting for him to go for it. At a straight section he didn’t disappoint and floored it, I followed suit and easily kept pace until I reached the speed limit and eased off and let him pull away.
Looked up the spec of the car today – 3 litre straight 6 twin turbo diesel, 309 bhp, 0-62 5.5 seconds.
So my 3.0si with its remap and lighter weight didn’t have any trouble keeping up.
It’s easy to take for granted, but a naturally aspirated 3 litre straight 6 shoehorned into a small lightweight 2-seater is something quite special :driving:

The thing which never fails to impress me is how responsive it is. I've driven many a naturally aspirated petrol 6+ cylinder cars before, and the power is just so direct in the zed. When i drive a turbo... especially a diesel... I am always disappointed by the lag.

My 35i only just outstretched a recent toy with a 640d gran coupe.

Bearing in mind the 640d gran is huge they're an exceptionally fast car.

Well done!

If nothing else maybe you installed a little "fear" in him. He (or she) is probably thinking wow, those little z4's are fast! :driving:

I'm considering a 640d as my next car. Heard one flooring it yesterday and the sound is dreadful!! That one was a convertible too - I would be keeping the roof up at all times!

Always a nice feeling when you put your foot down - especially when it fairs well compared to others. Would you recommend the remap Marlon? I'm not expecting it to make a huuuge difference but have been thinking about putting it on my planned mods list, a list that is getting bigger and bigger :headbang:

While I'd never swap to a 640d I do think you caught him on an off day, at least on paper

Sorry to say:

0-62 in 5.2 and 630nm with 308bhp vs
0-62 in 5.5 315nm and 261 bhp

My second car is also a 3.0 twin turbo diesel and while if sounds crap it will muller my Zed (albeit prefacelift) simply using the huge torque that turbo diesels put down
