Yesterday's road trip mpg

Post by Pro3ltr » Sat Mar 25, 2017 11:10 am

When I told people I was buying a 3 litre 6 cylinder petrol car... they all said "that'll drink fuel... you won't get far on a full tank"
Well take that doom mongers.....

165 miles of a road and motorway.. Dartford crossing twice and sitting in roadworks on the A21 on a trip to Essex and back....

39.2 mpg.....

That's better than my 2.2 diesel toyota rav4... albeit an auto.

No I wasn't driving like miss Daisey... where traffic allowed it was driven as it should be.

Impressed......
Z3... 3lt manual. Heated memory leather. Auto lights wipers. Xenons. Cruise. 230bhp.
Austin Mini automatic.... 998... 35bhp. Manual seats wipers lights...
Both as much Fun as each other!!!!

go drive around in start/stop traffic in the city centre for an hour and let the naysayers have their day :D

Tbf they can be driven frugally on a long run but I rarely see more than 28mpg as its used as a toy for me but still I rather enjoy those 28mpg :driving:
if its got tits or tyres..its trouble :D

When it drops below 25mpg it's not a problem... as you know it's capable of nearly 40mpg...

Does that kind of mpg on a trip mean you haven't enjoyed it???

The computer isn't exactly the most accurate IMHO. My own experience with would always indicate decent mpg, however tank would usually be empty too. Remember it is continually averaging gas use Vs miles travelled.

Nobody buys a z4 for economy, hence why they never made a diesel. Ignore the naysayers, they suffer from 'buyer justification syndrome' in their 1.25ltr Fiestas and Corsas. :poke:

I bought the M54B30 zed for both its' fuel economy and performance.
When your zed is your dd and you're doing long motorway jaunts and by long I mean >600km round trips through Europe as well as japes through the countryside, then it's important.
If you don't 'enjoy' your zed even cruising at a constant 70mph on the motorway, esp topdown, there's something wrong.

+1 for V power.
If I drive mine on cruise at 70mph I can get an indicated 39mpg. But if I'm going on a big boring motorway drive it's doubtful I'd take the Zed, so a moot point (I have a stinky diesel for that). I've just filled the tank will run it down and see what the overall average is. I bet it's quite a bit lower than what's displayed on the computer, i expect it will be 28 - 31.

fwiw, i managed to get about 36.78mpg according to mpg calc.
I got 445 miles out of the last full tank (55l). filled to the brim, then managed to run it down to a smidge over the absolute empty mark on the guage. I understand it's possible to drive past this but i didnt want to risk running out of fuel and damaging the injectors.
Mostly very conservative driving with the occasional blip of foot to the floor accelleration in sport mode on boxster-traffic light-challenge situations :P
Not bad going but I reckon high 20's to low 30's for a mix of spirited and conservative driving and maybe low 20's for the track or driving like a dick all the time

Took mine out to Chelmsford then up the M11 to Kings Lynn & back, computer said 44.1 mpg so allowing for inaccuracies or whatever, say 38mpg, pretty darn good.
Speaking of fuel, I always put V Power or super duper unleaded in her, not quite sure why as she's not a stressed, high revving engine like the Honda S2000, so why do we (I) put the expensive stuff in at 14p a litre more than ordinary unleaded. Don't get me wrong I don't mind putting it in, just interested why?

cos you've been successfully market-conditioned mate
You're worth billions to the petroleum industry when you believe that v-power, super unleaded, 100 octane racing fuel will give you the 'amazing increases in power, performance and economy' that's promised. In truth it's a marginal gain that you're paying for.
We tuned and ran the atom to run on 100-octane when we de-registered it for road use. No performance gains whatsoever. no increase in acelleration and if there were it was probably masked by wheelslip. no increase in top end speed either although that's probably down to gearing and aerodynamics.
i ran an e46 M3 for years on Euro95 (95 octane?) when youre supposed to run 98. no difference noticed.
95 from a main-brand supplier (BP, Shell etc) is all you need.

I have never noticed a performance difference but it seems to get better MPG with the premium fuels.

As for the 3l Z4 MPG - I have been astonished at how good it is when cruising on the motorway. Sat in stop-start traffic or driving it hard it's about where I expected it to be - Not so good!

I don't pay too much attention to the computer but my regular Bucks to Lancs journey costs about £15 less than it did in my 2l RS Clio.

I wasn't suggesting that putting V Power in the Z4 was going to get me startling performance and/or better mpg, that wasn't what I meant. I purely put V Power in her because it's the 'best' fuel & we all want the best for our cars! I ran a Jag V6 tdi at 100k pa & every now & again I ran a whole month on V Power diesel, made no soding difference to mpg at all, all that happened was my fuel bill for the month increased by £150!
