Best wheels and tyres
Hi
I joined yesterday and placed my first post asking for help in deciding whether some wheels I had looked at would fit my car. I received some really helpful advice (especially from Mr Wilks). Sadly the wheels were sold to someone else before I could get back to the seller. So here I am again seeking help to find the best wheels and tyres for my newly acquired 2005 2.2 SE. It is currently running on 16inch rims but needs new tyres. So it seems a good time to consider buying some new wheels too. Any advice on the best wheel patterns and most suitable sizes as well as which are the best tyres, would be really appreciated. Where is the best place to buy? Anything you can think of to help me to make the best choice would be well received.
Thank you in advance.
Kind Regards

There's a lot of questions in there!
What is "best" depends on your budget, intended use and personal taste.

Hi
Thank you for responding. I will look at the link Steve I take the point about budget too. I was just hoping to get a few ideas and recommendations and possibly what to avoid.

I'd go at least 18", I have 18" Mv2's on at the minute and want to go up to 19 to tidy up the arch gap. I have to admit I am a bit nervous about the ride on 19's but I'd say 18 is a good balance between appearance / comfort.

Do you want OEM or aftermarket wheels. Aftermarket wise well the worlds your oyster!
The most popular OEM wheels are type 107 Ellipsoids, type 108 Split rims or type 135 MV2 all three are 18 inch. Many including myself run spacers as well as the standard wheels are quite recessed into the arches. I have front 15mm and rear 20mm on my 107 Ellipsoids.
Perhaps the best piece of advice I can give you is regardless of wheel choice etc if your car is running runflat tyres then ditch them for the normal variety.

Some good advice / ideas above OP & to add to that i would stick with OEM staggered 18s as a first upgrade from 16s as opposed to jumping straight into 19s
You need new rubber anyways so a good opportunity to improve ride & looks of your car . ( don't bother with runflats )
If you stay with the standard 18inch set up 8j & 8.5j then tyre sizes i would look to fit 215 45 18 or 225 45 front with 245 40 18 rears , this will reduce your arch gap & will also negate the change from 16inch to 18inch in terms of ride comfort

Best wheels and tyres
Hi Everybody
Thank you all for the information. Really helpful. I now know what to look for. I have only had this car for a fortnight and bought it for Summer motoring. It is a silver 2005 SE WITH only 46000 miles on the clock, with all the documentation to confirm the mileage and has been well cared for. The only weakness is the small wheels and strange tyre combination. The fronts are Achilles ATR Sports and the rears are Bridgestone Potenza run flats. If you read the reviews for ATR Sports they are enough to give you a heart attack. Generally they conclude the tyres are a threat to life. So the change needs to be made quickly.
Joking this forum is one of the best things I have ever. Thanks again for all your help.
Kind Regards

Personally I got rid of 18" 108 split rims as I don't like the look and they are expensive to refurbish. I think 18" make the car look a little "over wheeled" so I went for 17" 103's which I've always like the look of. Gives a better ride as well on crappy UK roads.
I am probably in the minority with my opinions on wheels but without a doubt dump the RFT's (and stick to stock OEM wheels)

I would recommend staying with BMW wheels (used ones) and think 18" suit the car perfectly. 19 if you want that filled arch look, or 17 if you want that extra tyre wall height for those pesky pot holes! Depends the look you want plus factoring for the roads you typically end up on, or have where you live.
For 18's you've got MV2 or MV3 wheels which are popular. Then standard Z4 wheels as well, in style 107, 108 and 224 all at 18" as well.
I like the look of the 108's but they come with their own issues. 107's look good as well. 224's win hands down, but getting a set can be costly as they are very much sought after!
Tyres, get a decent set. Premium brand if you can, but avoid getting run flats. They cause alloys to crack.

Hi kis
Thank you for the additional information. I must admit to being a bit confused. I have been looking at 18 inch MV 2s on eBay this evening but according to some of the charts they won't fit my car. Are all the MVP 2s the same size? Some ads state that the wheels are, for example an e46. Others refer to the wheels as being from a 5 series. Are all the fittings the same?
Kind Regards

Right, heart set on the MV2's then? They're style 135 and offer the same fitment if you get a e46 (3 series) ones. The 5 series ones have different offsets so definitely won't fit.
So look for the 3 series ones. If the add is stating both (3 and 5 series) then they don't know what they're talking about! (been there before).
You want to make sure the ET or offset is 47 and 50 (front to rear). This ensures you've got correct fitment and the seller isn't trying to have you off by selling you two sets of front wheels... if they're genuine they'll have a staggered front to rear fitment. Of course they might also state 8J front and 8.5J rear... that in effect means the same thing. Just depends on how clued up they are wheel-wise.
All the best in the hunt!
Kis.

Hi kis
Thank you for clearing up the confusion. I do like the look of the MV2s but have not made a final decision. At least now I won't buy the wrong fitment if I do buy the MVs. There is almost too much choice for a simple soul like me.
Kind Regards

Hi kis
I found some nice looking brand new18 inch wheels from a 135i M Sport. They are model 436 M with part numbers 36117845870 front and 5871 back. The ET for the front is 45 and the back is 52. Do you reckon they would fit?
