Jack Jack Jack Jack your body......

Post by Newbers » Tue May 09, 2017 11:36 pm

Though I had a tonne of way more important things to be getting on with, I made this at the weekend from scrap that was lying around (an old steel from the roof and piece of mahogany from an old door frame):

Unfortunately I ran out of time (and angle grinder blades) otherwise I'd have made two :|

I guess its obvious?

The idea (not completely original) is that I can lift the car using a trolley jack under the standard jacking point then lower on to blocks of wood. Then I can use the same jack to lift the other side (hence in an ideal world I'd have two).

For all the BMW owning DIYers in the world I cannot believe there isn't anything cheaply available that does the same job....

I'm obviously misunderstanding, but if the jack is already using the jacking point, how do you get this block in there to lower onto?

This sits on top of the jack. The lug on the top locates in the jacking point socket under the car. I'll lift from underneath then put blocks (of wood) under this thing which I'll then lower down on to before removing the jack.

This area of mahogany should be good for over 50 tonnes (although I doubt that's the weak point......)

um, hope this is a mis-perception on my part perhaps, but it looks a bit tall to get under the zed in the first place? have u measured up?

This would need 114mm clearance beneath the jacking point to slide in place. I actually have to lift my car by hand or drive on to a piece of wood to get my jack under anyway. If I was designing it with a completely blank piece of paper it wouldn't look anything like this but I wanted to get something together with what I had lying around as quickly and with as few angle grinder blades as possible.....

I put this together as I'm just about to do all the standard suspension mods - after that's done I'll definitely need to drive on to blocks first.

I'll post some action photos after the weekend...

Cool idea... see this DIY a few times, but like you, never an actual product.
