Z4 Cruise - With a X5 Steering Wheel Adjuster

Post by kis » Thu May 18, 2017 9:52 pm

Just posting to see if anyone has tried or looked into the topic? I've got a e53 steering wheel adjuster stalk, and it's very similar to the e85 cruise stalk.

Can it be modified to become a cruise stalk? Could be a cheaper option as they are more readily available?

If anyone can track down wiring schematics I'm happy to test it out?

The problems I can see are that the wheel adjuster only moves in two planes, whereas the cruise one moves in four, and also has the resume button on the end.

The X5 stalk has up, down and pull, push. So 4 adjustments, and the way I see it on the Z4 stalk there's no need for up and down to cancel. The down could be used for just cancel and up could be "resume" which you normally push from the end. Not ideal granted... but could still be an option provided it's relatively straightforward to configure?

If it's straight forward switching, then it might be possible. But if the cruise is on the can network it'll be impossible..

A couple of questions that spring to mind other than what Mike's mentioned are;
1) will it even fit the mounts/cowling properly?
2) will the wiring plug in the car fit?

I would have thought the answer to these would be no, but without trying....
I think the zed stalk's only about £60-70 new so if the x5 one is a straight fit/plug and play ok fair enough, but anything awkward/fiddly and surely its not worth the hassle.

Hmmmm... Im going to say a bold NO*

*Nothings impossible but it seems like a major head and ball ache.
I retrofitted my cruise control, and bought the parts from BMW for under £100. Brand new parts, this is a second hand stalk thats going to need some major tweaking to make work if at all.

For the the money saved i dont think its a viable option, but good luck if you go down that route.

Someone once used one of these as a tiptronic shifter on an e46 , so i can imagine it can be done.

Well I didn't think I would be agreeing ESP on anything, at least this week but its difficult to argue with the above.
Why give yourself the headache for the realitively low costs involved, especially if you did manage to find an E85 stalk secondhand.

The cruise parts are £120+ now, so not as cheap.

I'll check the wiring diagrams, nothing goes over the K-bus from what I remember, but there is a signal to the ECU.

Shop around, as the price is not fixed across BMW UK but differs from dealer to dealer. I the was a particular dealers that used to offer the forum discount on parts and would mail them.

Was it Sopers of Lincoln anyone ??

I know a breaker who supplies the stalk, with the correct pre-cut factory cowl (top and bottom) for £70 delivered... Not a lot to go wrong with a switch...

I've had parts from this guy on Mike's recommendation and couldn't recommend him highly enough based upon the experience I had.
