Rusty door respray or replace

Post by philbo909 » Fri May 19, 2017 2:26 pm

Found a bit of rust that's worked it's way along the door sill, and up the bottom of the door now. bmw want £2700 for the fix and I've been advised by a local sprayers that a new door will be the way forward. Gutted. So I was wondering if anyone's got a sapphire black passenger door going spare :poke:
And how easy it is to change the door over along with fitting everything to the new shell?

yeh there's one on ebay for about £120 so getting a quote from the garage on fitting and using mine as a donor, but wondered how easy it is to fit a door inc. wires, windows, door card etc

Hour or two tops, not difficult, although I'd be inclined to look for a "complete" door, even if it's £50-£100 more, as it's a 15 min swap in that case, just the lock barrel to change.

ok thanks, I'll keep an eye out as there's not one on ebay right now, more money to be made from selling it separately i guess

I wouldn't worry about a complete door, especially as you have a coupe as most available will be from roadster with different glass.

Is it normal for doors to be this rusty?

I'm guessing the door has hit sonething like a wall when opening damaging the edge leading to this.

Has your car lived by the coast, you will probably find it will just rust away in front of your eyes
Must say, both my doors are fine, a good 2nd hand door will sort it

Doesnt look that bad to me. I'd suggest grinding it back to metal, treating and respraying before going to the hassle of looking for a replacement door. Jeez.

Looks pretty crap to me, On a vintage /classic car, where parts are scarce, then yes a repair is worth doing. On a car of this age, get another door...much cheaper, especially if you get the same colour

yeh I bit the bullet and ordered a new door so i should have a rust free door in a week! the car spent a lot of time in Portsmouth where I'm guessing the previous owner grazed it on a high curb/low wall

bmw charge a fortune and the local body shop won't guarantee it because of it's location, rust will come back. New door is £100 alone if i put the labour in, can even sell this door after to make some of that up
no brainer i think
