3.0 si - bonnet steam when raining in traffic ?

Post by RyanB88 » Wed May 24, 2017 3:46 pm

Hi

Car doesn't over heat and fluid levels are fine. No steam/smoke when dry.

Problem = when raining and in stop start traffic, does anyone else notice steam coming off the bonnet? Is this something to worry about? I've never had this before with any other cars! Not even my M3 did this and that ran hot!
Z4 now sold :(

Have seen it on mine in the right conditions. Dont think mine has any insulation under the bonnet so i guess thats why. Well thats what i figure anyway.

I love seeing steam coming off my bonnet in the rain, it gives me something to look at in traffic and reminds me that I have a 3-litre beast under the bonnet! :D :D

I'd say it's normal, these cars have no under bonnet insulation as mentioned, and the engine can get a tad hot (normal) so under light rain, I'd expect it.

Not seen it on my Zed but my Focus RS did it every time it got a fine covering of water/rain on it. Not a problem I had it seven years and covered just over 198K and never burst into flames

most bmws do it, no insulation on bonnet, also think the bonnets alloy so absorbs heat quicker.

after a long drive ones n light rain mine was still steaming after been parked up 5 mins

Mine does this too!

I haven't had it happen on any other car since I owned a Rover P6B 3500S, which also had an aluminium bonnet!

Is it colour related ? Do dark cars do it more because dark colours transmit the heat better ? Or maybe the steam is more visible against a dark background compared to a silver/grey bonnet ?

I've been steaming a few times in the rain, and in the dry as well come to think of it.
Start the day with a smile, get it over with.

I see it quite a bit - too many rainy traffic jams

I got a huge shock yesterday - black smoke coming over the bonnet. It stopped when the 15 plate Kia 4x4 in front of me drove off
