3.0si - 100k - not feeling itself
Right. Now there's isn't torrential rain, I've drove into work this morning and there isn't any hesitation, no unwillingness to rev or any of the issues it had yesterday. Completely back to normal with everything ?!
A few years back I had an RX8 which had a cold air filter at the bottom of the front bumper. It used to get wet during heavy downpours and acted very similar to how my zed acted yesterday.
It's making me think it's somehow water/ air intake related.... even though my zed has the standard intake... water may somehow be getting into it? Not enough to hydrolock but enough to cause some issues
One baffled z4 owner!

I'll throw another curve ball out there. I had a similar issue with my Si where the rev's would be sluggish to respond and slow to drop it almost felt like everything was delayed, In the end I tracked this down to the vanos solenoids. Replaced both took about 20mins and shes been good as gold since.

Thanks mate, a good shout. But I think more likely to be somehow rain related due to a leak or something of that nature now

OK So...
Driving perfect again today !
Had the air filter out and it's bone dry and very clean, replaced around 1500 miles ago.
Can't see any obvious leaks here. Will plug it into Carly when I can tomorrow night and update the thread

Finally managed to plug Carly in tonight!
Ok so the only engine fault code is this:
Control input - vanos bank 2
002A82
Anyone had this before or think this is related to the problem? It wasn't there this time last week!

Mines done this before too. On different occasions. I've not been able to associate it with anything tho. I don't even recall if I was 'WOTing' the car or not! Let me know if you discover what it was!RyanB88 wrote: ↑Mon May 29, 2017 9:32 pm Thanks for everybody's help and to you dan too
I've just nipped out quickly with the lights on, so the dashboard was obviously lit up too. Not sure if this is related but I assume it must be. When I gave the car WOT at 2500rpm the dashboard lights switched off/dimmed for about 2 seconds. I'm now thinking ignition coils more likely?

Not sure about that but it's a side issue now because I have a fault code... never done that before or since!kis wrote: ↑Wed May 31, 2017 5:10 pmMines done this before too. On different occasions. No idea about the fault but vanos issue is probably seal related... DLV just did his M54 and I'm sure it's not too different on the facelift...

As far as I know the n52 facelift engine doesn't suffer the same vanos seal issues as the m54 does, I'd be more inclined to think vanos solonoids/filters.
Swap them over with each other & see if the fault changes banks

Thanks for the suggestions so far all!
Rob - can you tell me more about the Vanos solenoids? How many is there? Are they easy to change? Are they interchangeable? Where's the best place to buy a new one/ pair for? Do you need to replace the pair like you would with suspension on both sides?
Any other info or DIY guides appreciated !

Hi, there's 2 solonoids that are interchangeable with each other, simple to change with only one fastener on each.RyanB88 wrote: ↑Wed May 31, 2017 7:58 pm

It's ok to replace one as mini recently did this with our Cooper, eurocarparts sell them, I should think they're cheaper than bmw if you use their constantly available discount codes.
I'm sure I've seen guides on utube for n52 solonoid changes & how to remove/clean the filters.

Thanks again fiend your help Rob!
I've got this Saturday booked to myself to machine polish the whole car and clean out the vanos solenoid. I've reset the fault code for now and hopefully it works fine until the weekend
Found some videos helpful on YouTube.
Will update the thread with an update

You can get an idea if the valvetronic sensor is on the way out by takeing the plastic rocker box cover off and disconnecting the multi plug from the front top of the rocker box itself. If you look down and see oil lying around the multi pins then the sensor is leaking inside.
Mine was leaking and caused a miss around 3000 revs.New sensor was £320 plus new rocker box gasket.

Always nice when people come back to conclude problems - battery was mentioned but have to say it wouldn't have been top of my list, esp when the alternator provides all the power when the car is running and you never mentioned any starting issues. These cars certainly seem very sensitive to aged batteries causing all sorts of weird and wonderful problems.
