Ruby Black Anomaly.

Post by AlxBMW » Mon May 29, 2017 10:40 pm

Good evening all,

I am hopefully taking a look at a 2006 2.5si in Ruby Black over the next couple of days.

Seller makes an interesting point that on insurance and MOT history the colour shows up as "red". Is this anything to be concerned about ?

Just want to check I'm not buying a respray.

Thanks
Alex.

No, they have been known to be registered as red due to the name Ruby. Very unlikely to be a respray.

Mine is registered as 'black' on my insurance, however, I think it differs from company to company.

Follow Scooba Steves advice, take a note of the VIN amd check

This

As ruby is listed as the first colour it's classed as the primary one.

Surely that can be corrected?

I've been stopped a few times - for speeding I thought - where the BIB has only been checking that my 'red' car was actually red.

I don't mind being stopped for that sort of thing, and hope they do the same if it's ever stolen.

You can change it with the DVLA, but they won't accept Ruby Black - so you have to choose from Red, Black or Multi.

Mine is black on the logbook so definitely not all of them been registered incorrectly. Think it comes down to what dealer did the first registration ans possibly even how the numpty in the dealership was feeling when they registered the car.

Maybe look up the registration date my money would be on the "red" ones being a Monday morning

I think its the supplying dealer who initially registers it and its key details with the DVLA. So its probably a case of what ever their admin entered. I've seen this a few times over the years usually with cars that are hard to categorise such as dark silver/light grey and have obscure names. Peugeot Moonstone Silver caused us a few headaches at work back in the day when a lot of dealers called it silver but some light grey (when its obviously silver). Maybe the DVLA has better systems for this these days.
If your really worried agree with the owner to scratch a hiden bit of painted body and see what colour it is, if you see red then you need to see red! :D

My Ruby Black Coupe also said Red on the V5.

It never caused me a problem, but the previous owner said his OH had been stopped twice because of it!
