Idling suddenly terrible and misfire

Post by step_change » Mon Jul 17, 2017 4:17 pm

6 Cyclinder 2.5Si 2007

Car was all fine Friday. Started her up this morning was seemed all fine ready for my nice run out to Cambridge with the roof down . A mile down the road I give way at a roundabout and idling terrible dropping down to 300 rpm back up to 700, down again, all over the place and terrible rough running. Got it home OK. Seemed to drive OK-ish to get it back home at normal revs but lacking in power and when back at home on the drive it was really rough idling and apparent misfiring again. So had to do my 200 mile trip in 535 and not in the sun!

Rang up Indy to take it in on Wednesday ad will leave it with him (good guy who has done bits for me on it before). He reckons by the description could be spark plugs or coil pack. No idea when these were last changed.

What does the Z4 Oracle think?

It could be quite a few things, best bet is to get it plugged in, check your intake boot isn't split though!

When I have finished work I am going to have a look for anything obvious. It was fine Friday night. Not used it this weekend and then today.....
Yeah, they said they'll plug it in and look for any codes thrown up.
Glad it went at this end and not when parked in Cambridge earlier...... Fortunately I have another car...

I think I fixed it. The intake boot is sound but the jubilee clip had come loose and was not clamping the boot FIRMLY onto the engine. it had come out of the bit where it is keyed into the other rubber boot bit that is closer to the engine. It was still "on" though but loose so air would have got in around the side. I loosened the jubilee clip, inserted the boot fully and tightened up the clip again. Went for a spin and it is now ok. Also, engine seems more powerful as well.

Does that all sound about right? Woudk this really have had that much of an effect? I suppose it would since a split boot can have this effect I hear as well......

Dare I risk it to Oxford tomorrow from Nottingham? 200 mile round trip???

EDIT: would post a picture but that seems to not be an option anymore.....

Just 'add file' at the bottom of your page and upload straight from your phone mate. That's if you are using a phone, easiest way

That jubilee clip came loose and the boot was loose.

It made it OK - 205 miles round trip - and I am getting 15% better fuel economy as well.
